Question Air Fuel Gauge Problem (o2 sensor)??

I installed a air fuel ratio gauge and it works but its not giving me a correct reading. It jumps from rich to lean and back all the. Even at idol. I have it hooked up to the o2 sensor in the header. Is it a bad o2 sensor? Would moving it to the o2 sensor in the cat fix this? Is the check engine light giving the o2 sensor a false reading?

RRM Intake Manifold
RRM Throttle Body
RRM Fuel Rail
RRM Header (Check Engine Light on)
2 1/4 exhaust

The stock O2 sensor is a narrowband sensor... it will NOT read the AFR correctly hence the "sweeping" pattern it makes. The only way to get the A/F gauge to work properly is install a wideband O2 sensor which is sold by zeitronix or busch or any other known brand.

Summary: A/F gauge is useless without a wideband O2 sensor.

so should i replace both o2 sensors or just the one in my header that im spliced into? will it confuse my car by having 2 different sensors?

You dont replace any O2 sensors... you leave the 2 stock sensors alone. You have a mufflershop weld on a bung for a new O2 sensor somewhere along the exhaust (usually on the downpipe) and use that sensor for the A/F gauge.

i want to make sure i do this right, so after i have the new wideband o2 sensor i just use one of the sending wires to connect to my single wire from the gauge. i mean where does the end conection go from the new o2 sensor?

If you spliced into your original 02 header sensor you have a narrowband o2 sensor and not a wideband. If you had a true wideband o2 sensor it wouldn't bounce around and you would have to add an additional sensor somwhere along your exhaust. That o2 sensor would be connected to your o2 module.

The new O2 sensor is solely used for the wideband gauge... so the 2 ground wires are grounded and the signal wire is used for the AF gauge signal. Im not 100% sure about that setup but im sure someone will chime in soon.

I don't think you can use a normal Autometer type Air/Fuel gauge with a wideband O2 either. You need to get the controller that comes with most Wideband o2 kits. So basically your current Air/Fuel gauge is good only for a small disco show, not reading proper A/F's...

subydrift is correct. You cannot use a wideband sensor with a narrowband gauge cuz the narrowband reads from .5 volts to ??? volts or something like that. The wideband o2 sensor outputs 1.4 to 2.5 volts i believe and owuld cause the narrowband sensor to always read rich. IN other words, don't waste your time trying to convert a narrowband o2 display into a wideband one. good luck!
