HELP: P0139 Slow Response O2 Sensor Code

I have an RRM turbo kit on my car with RRM header, nothing else (test pipe will be going in soon). I kept getting the engine code P0139 Slow Response O2 Sensor after the installation, so I put in an O2 simulator. This was causing me to run lean as I found out when doing my emissions inspection. I would rather fix this the right way than put the O2 simulator back in and risk engine damage. Does any one know a legitimate way to fix this?

Setup: 2003 Lancer OZ, 31000 miles, manual tranny, RRM Stage 1, RRM headers, stock down pipe, stock cat, stock midpipe, RMR axle back.

add fuel Have you called RRM? They're pretty insistant that all of their parts will work together flawlessly.

How much boost are you running?

7 psi, but the highest I have ever seen on my gauge is 6.4 psi.

And to be honest I don't know if that's the code I am getting now, just know it was the code I was getting. Once my engine light comes on again (and it will in a day or two) I'll take it to an auto parts store and have them check it.

to clarify, should someone else chime in- that's the 2nd o2 sensor that's throwing the code.
I don't think that's what's making you run lean as it functions as a check against the first o2 (actaully, it's checking that the 1st cat is doing something to the exhaust as it leaves the header). All it REALLY needs to do is give the ECU a voltage that's different than the 1st o2 sensor. The first o2 is the one that regulates your fuel trims.

I think you just need some more gas or maybe higher octane to produce more emissions (because it'll burn less completely than a lower octane).
What oct are you running now? Have you considered larger injectors?

What does RRM have to say?

Oh, and I don't know how much diff it will make, but are you intercooled?

I'm running 93 octane, and from what I read running higher octane only hides the problem with NO emissions, but I don't care just as long as I pass, which I did after disconnecting the O2 Simulator. I run 93 octane any ways because it's safer for the turbo kit/engine.

So maybe I need a new 1st O2 sensor? How can you tell if they are bad?

I haven't talked to RRM about it, I was going to hold off since I didn't buy the kit from them (bought it from Vince "Guru_Del"). Bigger injectors and eManage are on the horizon, but suspension and wheels are next.

I am intercooled, Stage 1 has the intercooler.

Call RRM. It doesn't matter where it came from, they'll do customer support.

An RRM product is still an RRM product.

(And to be fair, they'd probably give you advice on another's company's product - they're just that cool.)

I'll try calling them if the engine code comes back and I get it read. Problem is I don't have any tools for reading A/F ratio other than EGT gauge, and that really doesn't help all that much.

Well, if you run too hot, you're too lean. So it's a start to give you an idea.

What exactly would be too hot? Idle I run around 800 - 900 degrees. Driving I run between 1150 and 1350. I have seen it go up just over 1600 when pushing it.

that's the problem with tuning with JUST the EGT- as you get too lean, your EGTs go back down, but your internal engine problems go up. You need to know which side of "good" you're on

again- add fuel.

Well with the RRM kit there is no tuning as advertised, so I have no idea what's going on.

psssh, i get that code all the time. first came on when i put my kamikaze header on. i tried to fix it with the MIL eliminator, but that didn't do anything (could have made it worse, i dunno). and i'm n/a

its the code most people get when they remove the first cat (as you need to do with aftermarket headers)

did you reset the ecu after you took the o2 sim out? frankly, i wouldn't worry. could just be a bad o2 sensor, or it could just be telling you what you already know: your missing your first cat converter
