well i guess that'll work but for how long? can it cause permanent damage to your gps?

I don't see how it could damage you GPS in any way. All you are doing is effectively making your head unit think that it is not moving. Shouldn't hurt anything.... Anyone else?

who has instructions on removing the DVD / NAV unit in order to get to these wires?

And what about custom installing the switch on the left of the steering column where those three blank inserts are. Has anyone popped one of those out? Can you install a switch there?
