heavy duty wire harness

i was intrested in buying high wattage bulbs (80 watts) and the heavy duty wire harness now will the harness prevent melting of the wires and everything and should i be concerned about the car drawing to much power and other components melting liek the headlight housing e.t.c

nokya sells a high wattage harness and a plug and play harness. I advise you to go the plug and play way, because cutting wires can be an issue with your warrantee should you have any problems.

they will run you about 15 bucks or less for the plug and play ones. 6 for the regular harness.

Everything else unless should be fine

Rather than buy high watt bulbs, why not just buy good ones? Or an HID kit?

One thing to keep in mind if you're upgrading to higher wattage bulbs is the field effect transistor (FET) for the low beams. I have no specs on it, but its possible that you could burn it up by running too much of a load through it. If that happened, your low beams and DRLs would likely not work at all. Worst case (I doubt it'd actually happen, but if it fails like my old pinball machine's transistors sometimes fail, anythings possible) it would also fry your ETACS ECU. The FET is located under the engine-bay fuse box, the "Relay" with the big metal heatsink on it.

that’s odd
especially because sylvania’s say they are legal for on road use and oem approved…
the main reason i find it odd is because when i took the oem bulbs out of my 08 lancer…they were sylvania’s…so upgrading to the sylvania silverstar ultras just seemed like the right thing to do. lol

Yeah, ever since the Silverstars came out I've had them in all my cars. I have yet to upgrade to Ultras cuz my originals are still glowing strong! I even use the "trick" to illumniate both filaments, which I'm sure isn't good...but nothing better than low & high beams together to see in dark areas.

ok if you want to run 80 watt bulbs. Take 80 and divide by 12V to get the amp draw PER LIGHT. This is about 6.6 amps per light. You should be fine using stock wiring. Although it is bundled into the harness and get no airflow so it may get warm. The only way to do it properly I would think is install the bulbs and get someone to turn on the lights and feel the wire. Wait 20 mins or so until it might actually get warm, and it probably wont burn through.

At work I will wire in some trailer hook up lights for customers that are 50 watts a piece and I will use 16 gauge wire to run both. But 18 gauge, which I think is what our car has, will work fine to run each light separate. Good luck
