How to: replace auto shift knob with a manual knob
i've received many questions regarding my replacing the auto shift knob with a stick shift knob, so i thought i'd just write a short how-to on this simple project that will take only 30minutes.
*After the replacement, you will be shifting by pushing the entire knob down.*
things you need:
-non-thread type manual knob
-phillips head screw driver
-shift boot
-optional:dremel tool to cut steel rod
1) take off the original auto knob, there are two screws located on the front of the knob facing the front of the car.
2) you should see a steel rod and a white plastic "head" piece on the rod
3) if your new manual knob has spacer, you can put that on to reduce the play between the rod and the knob
-if theres no spacer, you can go ghetto like i did--put painters tape around the thicker rod, as shown in the following pic:

4) this step is optional: if you want the shift knob to sit lower (a short shifter), you can cut the thinner steel rod. *Remember to leave enough length on the thinner rod so it can still be pushed down for gear shifting* i cut mine about 1.5cm shorter.
5) slide the new knob on and have fun with it!
i modified it many times, you can check out some old pics in my show-n-shine thread.
here are some new pics (after cutting the rod for shorter shifter)
