Possible engine oil leakage, mods to blame?
Possible engine oil leakage, mods to blame?
Hi guys, about two weeks ago my dad changed the engine oil in my lancer gts (08 model) and he noticed some oil from the engine has leaked down the engine bay. I got freaked out because I just installed a RRM pulley V1 onto the car one day before he noticed the oil leak so I have no idea if the pulley caused the problem. I asked him multiple times if he's sure that it's not oil that spit out from the drainer cap or maybe he spilled the oil himself while changing and he said he's positive that it came from the engine. I take his word for it because he's been doing basic maintainance work on cars for many years now. I've been driving the car ever since and there has been no signs of oil leakage (I inspect it weekly to check for further leaks).
My question now is what can be the cause of an engine leakage and is it a severe problem? I cannot take the car into the dealership to get it inspected because that will most likely void my engine warranty, I'm sure the dealer will blame the pulley caused the leak. I went to a local mechanic 2 days ago and he didn't see any leak but he said if go to dealership they might void the warranty if they are unreasonable because I have a RRM SRI and HID. Please give me advice on what I should do, should I go back to stock pulley or just forget it happened and continue to drive the car... if I continue to drive it will I somehow damage the engine even more?
Thanks for the help

There has been a problem with the pulley and oil leaks. V1 a few had problems, V2 has a hardened steel sleeve to solve that problem. People started to have problems after a few thousand miles on the pulley, you can check the pulley area or the pulley itself. There is more information around here somewhere....
If it's leaking down your engine bay, I don't think the issue would be with the pulley. Start by cleaning up the leak as best you can and then drive for a few days to see if it comes back.
I've been driving for 2 weeks and there has been no leaks but I want to know what caused the first. The car has been inspected 2 days ago and there is no sign of oil on the pulley or the belt that wraps around it. The mechanic said he doubts the pulley caused the leak (because the leak was behind and sort of below the pulley).
Also I am aware of the leaking problem with V1 pulley, which is the one I have and I got it used. It has been used for a month or two previously and I saw + felt the pulley had a very faint groove line, it is not as deep as what other users have posted in that pulley thread but it's definately there. I compared the groove line to the stock pulley, the stock pulley had a line but it's only visual, you cannot feel a dent when you touch it and I put 24000km on the stock one.
Right now I'm torn between putting the stock back on or continue driving with the mod, my dad wants to take it into the dealership to have a look but I don't even know if this will happen again and I don't want to void the warranty by going in.

The V1 pulley from RRM is known to leak. I recommend you get the V2. It is actually a manufacturing defect which is reflected by the light weight aluminum pulley. RRM did a good job of solving the problem with their V2 pulley.
