Can someone post a how to on covering the front bumper with black vinyl. Do not come here and say search because I did. I found how to paint it but not a hot to vinyl it.

within the next week or so when I get some "car time" in, i'll make you a write up

 

pretty much cut out a big piece of vinyl and cover the grill...and use a X-Acto knife to cut around the edges..

you also would have to remove the grill first..

 

I would like to see this as well. Some pics of the pre-cut kits that come from ebay would be great as well. Also any one have any recommendations of a company that sell high quality vinyl by the foot at a reasonable price?

 

Thanks I would appreciate it a lot. Also include what you cleaned the grill with because I have a white lancer and right after I clean it, drive down the rode dead bugs everywhere which is the full purpose of me doing it.


Well I am just going to buy some black vinyl at my local pep boys they have a roll for like 10 bucks.

 

go to a decal shop, they'll do it for you much better than you ever could. they'll do entire cars sometimes

 

Vinyl doesn't look that hard when looking at some tutorials online.

Simplified steps:

1. Buy a roll of flat black vinyl off ebay (quick search results in several rolls for about $5.00 w/o shipping)
2. Take off your grille
3. Cut out vinyl parts that are slightly larger than the area you want to cover
4. SLOWLY apply the vinyl from one side to the other (vertically) which applying pressure with a soft cloth and stretching the material slightly
5. If there are air bubbles or wrinkles, just peel it back abit and reapply
6. Inspect and enjoy

Seems easy enough and I will be taking up this project when the weather warms up.

if you have the correct vinyl you cannot peel it back without ripping your paint off. that is if you get the high-end automotive stuff. also you don't use a cloth to apply it, you use a little squeegee tool. some parts of the center of the bumper that would be vinyled have complex curves as well, so you may need to apply heat at some point without melting your bumper. my previous job to what i do now was applying decals to buildings/windows/cars/ you name it. we'd do full vinyl over vans sometimes. i'll have photos of mine whenever i have the time to take pictures

 

Don't mean to be a d*ck but DO A SEARCH! There's a how-to on painting the middle bumper, but guess what, there's also instructions on how to vinyl it too.

 

i was pretty dumb the first time i tryed to vinyl my front bumper, i tryed to cut the vinyl the exact size of the front of the bumper then tryed to apply it xD. Its pretty straight forward on how to do it.

Clean your bumper
Remove the grill (i didnt but advisable to anyway)
cut a rectangle peiece of vinyl bigger than your bumper
Apply it in small parts (best to work from the top down i found)
any wrinkles just pull it off and pull it a bit tighter
any smaller bubbles ect i used a pin just to pop them and flatten them out

After i couldnt be bothered getting all of the bothered i let the car sit in the sun for an hour and all the bubbles that i didnt pop just went away

 

Vinyl isnt that hard....I have done all my vinyl on my car....I use a heat gun and a very sharp exacto knife. And a hard plastic rubber squeegie to push out the bubble and make it nice and snug of a fit.....If you do get small bubbles you will use that exacto knife and make a tiny hole and push the air out....you dont need to pull your grill off to get a nice clean look.....

Your vinyl work looks pretty sick mrblondelv! Is that all vinyl on your hood? Did you vinyl the roof and bumper as well? I really like the work you have done, props to you. Did you paint the chrome grille or did you have the flat black upper grille to begin with? The vinyl looks like it matches the upper grille perfectly, what type did you use? Sorry for all the questions but your graphics are sick yet not ricey at all (except maybe the huge Mitsu logo

 

Thanks alot bro, I have vinyl on the front bumper, the "chrome" grill accent, the hood, the roof, the top of the spolier, and the back of the trunk....I used 3m vinyl, flat black for it all.....Yeah, I was thinking the logo does look ricey, but its all good....it sets off the black rims.....its pretty aggressive looking from the front...but it does get alot of looks.....someone actually thought it was a anniversary paint job...

Bu tif you do vinyl, make sure you use a heat gun to make the vinyl stick like no other, and it wont mess up your paint if you decide to peel it....
