Another HID problem

Before you all say to use search, I have. And I've also googled. No real help.

And background info? I did not install my HID's so as to exactly what type of bulb I have, I'm not sure.

So here's my problem, I had these for about 2 weeks and they started flickering. So I took it back in and they replaced the fuse and ground. Fixed.

It's now been I'd say a month and another problem. I turn my car on (lights off, pbrake on) and then I turn my lights on. Nothing. I hear the little flick that I always hear when I turn them on but I don't see anything. So I turn the car off. I wait about 4-5 mins and try again and they work fine. I hear that little flick and they turn on.

Later, I am about to leave work and same thing. Turn on the car, hear the flick, nothing. So I say screw it and drive with my brights on. (Sucks for the other drivers haha)

So again later, I'm leaving and I try again. Same thing. Nothing. So I am going home, dark, obviously need light so I drive with my brights on. I see a little flash and I'm just like "Those damn lights!". I turn off my brights and the HID's are on. I drove the rest of the way (about 10 mins) home. No flickering, no problems at all.

So I would assume it is the fuse considering the flick is there but NOTHING... but if a fuse is blown, they wouldn't work at all.

And I've seen people ask how old they are. I've had the car itself since November '09 and these lights since about February 20 or so. So obviously I'm nowhere near the life of these lights. I will take it back to where I got it done and either 1-have them fix it properly or 2- tell them to put my old lights in and do it myself.

Anyone have any idea what it could be?

I'm in there with you the only difference is my lights work perfectly...as long as I turn them on before I turn on the car. I think its the DRL's that come equipped with our cars that are the root of our problems . It has something to do with the voltage used for the DRL's isn't enough to start the lights that's what i was told anyway.

So you turn on your lights, and then start the car and they work fine?

Hmm, I'll def try that.

But that's obv not what your SUPPOSED to do, so something's messed up. Gotta figure out what...

Anyone know what that problem is?

Alright, another update...

I checked all the connections I could find and all were tight. I turned on my car, turned on the lights and came on. Sweet. But I was following cars and sometimes saw my lights, othertimes not.

So since I wouldn't call it flickering since it's either their completely on or off, what would it be?

Sounds like the DRL's are causing the problem. The DRL's activate when the car is ON and the e-brake is DOWN. If you turn on your HID lights before the DRL's activate (Hence, turn them ON before you start the car) you should have no problem.

Are you using a standard 9006 Relay Harness? If not, this could also be a problem. By using a Relay Harness you source a clean power signal straight from the battery, rather than from your headlight plug.

Alrighty, I took it in and of course the lights were working fine and everything they checked was fine.

But today I was leaving work during dark, turned on my lights before I started the car (pbrake up) and no lights. Had to drive with my brights on until I got to about 80mph and flash, they turned on. But they were flickering.

So since everyone has suggested it's DRL's causing the problem, Imma tell the people that put em in, to take it all out n hook it up like normal and then I'll do it myself or go somewhere else. This is my 3rd problem with these lights and each time they have no answer.

Are you using a relay in the harness for the HIDs?
I had something similar happen to mine. It turned out that moisture was building up around the relays, and once that happens, the current was being shunted to ground. So I would hear a click but no lights. After some time they would magically just turn on. Eventually I got fed up and took them out for a week, but before i sent them back i hooked them up to a battery for s&g and lo and behold they worked again. So I went to Radio Shack and got one of those plastic project boxes, cut some holes in the side for the harness to slip thru and put all the relays in the box. Closed it up, tapped it shut and mounted it in front of the driver side front tire. Ever since then I have not had a single problem with my lights. Just as a side note, i do have mine hooked into my parking lights.

You can do the turn on the light before the car but that won't last forever. You will most likely need a relay, reason for the flickring.

I had the same problem bit of a pain up the a$$ but got it fixed.

First I installed just the HID kit itself everything was ok except major flickering, than I put in a Low voltage Relay harness tried again, flickered still but less. Lastly I put in a Light Out Module and BAM perfect no flickering lights work great.

My lights start with the car you dont have to turn them on before you start the car because they act as DRL as well, just start the car as you normally would and your on your way with your new HID's. Only problem that you might have is when you would unlock your car with your remote it will show that the headlights are on in your display when their not no big deal there but just a heads up

Hope it helps
