Royal Purple/Oil Change Question
Royal Purple/Oil Change Question
I know there is a thread for oil changes, and synthetic oil is discussed, however I have not seen anyone say anything about Royal Purple. I used this in my camaro for about 3 oil changes and loved it(except the price lol). Does anyone recommend it for our Lancers? I have an 09 GTS CVT. My dealer does my oil changes for free but they only replace the oil with the most basic 5w-20. I want to start using synthetic, namely Royal Purple, anyone have a better oil?
People are allowed to fall in love with what ever synthetic oil they like. I personally use Mobil 1 only because I have driven many miles in my life. I know it works, and works well and never lets me down. I have one car with about 250,000 miles on it. using mobil1 extended performance and change the oil every 18,000 miles. Emissions test is still flawless and the car drives like day one.
I am not sure if every synthetic out there will do that. But the general rule of them is synthetic fluid is made to be perfect. Excellent flow, Excellent heat break down resistance, and Excellent Detergent packages that work to keep your engine clean and free of gunk.
Here on the EVOM forms, you will find many who get into knife fight over which oil reins supreme in ultra extreme situations. You will hear false rumors and hear say from time to time too. But generally regardless of what fluid you choose, it will perform far better than the normal conventional fluid.

Awesome, thanks. I'm probably going to change my oil this weekend, is there anything I should know before going to do it myself? I've done it countless times on my old camaro so I know what to do for the most part, but I've never been underneath the Lancer yet.
In regards to oil. Running a 0w20 will save you a little bit of money in fuel economy as well. Dont let the weight number scare you its completely safe. If a dealership gives you grief over putting in a synthetic oil like mobil 1 or Royal Purple 0w20. Slap them and have them put that in writing. Its completely safe so long as your not attempting to track you car or something lol. really good in the winter time.
I havent gotten there yet on my blog since I am still testing the layout . But I will be talking about synthetic oil filters. People do a good job on selecting the right oil, but sometimes they take for granted their OE oil filter.
Looking at things like increased filtration, or increased capacity are important.
I recommend going with either a nice Mobil 1 Oil filter if you want to avoid any talk back from the dealership about warranty. If a dealership threatens you with talk that an oil filter will void your warranty, and that you have to buy theirs. A) Slap them B) get them to put it in writing and send that in to Mobil 1. I am sure you will get some support. You can buy K&N oil filters as well, those work pretty well. There are countless of brands out there. Only you can make the determination of which is best for you.
Buy the filters in bulk from a trusted source
That way you will save some coin in the long run. Royal Purple has oil filters as well.

Synthetic oil filters? That's a first. I'll have to look into those..
Also, I spoke to a good friend who knows infinitely more than I ever will about cars, and he said that I should do at least 1 or 2 oil changes with a synthetic blend before I completely go from conventional to synthetic. Any thoughts on that?
I'm not too worried about the whole warranty thing, I am deploying in August and plan on letting my wife drive my car until I get back(ugh) so really I want to 1.) enjoy driving it before I leave, 2.) make sure it's in excellent condition and 3.) pay it off by the time I get back so I will own it outright.

there's plenty of good info on oil. one thing to consider--generally it is not advisable to change brands of oil too frequently -- each brand has a similar profile of additives & conditioners within its own products, however this varies from one brand to the next. when you drain your oil, unless you take the engine apart, you only drain about 85% of the oil. Soooo... if you change brands you wind up with a mishmash of additives, etc. from the various oil manufacturers. I'm not saying you can't do it, but better to switch to a new brand and then stay within that brand.
if you want an expert's advice, read this: http://www.ferrarichat.com/forum/faq...=haas_articles
Otherwise, proceed at your own risk--there are some very sincere but mistaken ideas about motor oil and you'll hear many of them on an open forum like this.
btw, if your car has a turbo, DO NOT use a blend, ONLY synthetic.

My advise to you is to switch to synthetic early and maintain that course. Then you can avoid situations like I described above?

Alright, taking into consideration everyone's input, looks like I will be waking up early tomorrow and doing an oil change + tire rotation. I am going to let the oil drain for much longer than usual, then add royal purple and see what happens. I'm going against the advice of my local friend but instead trusting you guys switching over to the better synthetic. Thanks!
