Notorious HVAC Temp Control Problem!!

I have a 2002 OZ Rally and the temp nob was broke off when I bought it. I did not know the trouble I would be facing with this. My A/C is out too and I'm going to be replacing soon. My question is am I totalling f#$%ked with any hopes of replacing the old shaft and knob or do I absolutely have to replace the HVAC control unit? Any help would be great! Also, if I do have to replace the HVAC control unit, do I have to recover the refridgerant?

You have to replace to entire unit as well as the gears that are controlled. They sit on the Driver's Side (LHD) just behind the paneling. Good luck it was 500+ for me to replace mine, and that was with labour.

The temp knob controls the blend doors. I'd probably just live with reaching down on the left side of the airbox (above your right foot) and manually turn the plastic gear to the desired position. That's a lot of cash just to fix that little weak mechanical connection that is reachable by hand.

It would be a lot easier to replace the whole unit. The speed control switch separates from the unit, so if yours works, you'll just need to find one with the other knobs fully functional.

eBay has several, and they can be found cheap, compared to dealer cost. Replacing it isn't that hard.
