lancer gts m/t rev limiter while in neutral

WI Hey guys, so i was out for a "spirited" drive and i took off from 1st and took it up to 3rd. When i went to go shift from 3rd to 4th my hand slipped and stayed in neutral as my foot was planted on the gas. I looked down at the tach and to my surprise the rpms were holding right before redline. I thought for sure that i would of seen the tach buried all the way to 8k. can anyone explain why this happened and if any damage could oocur from it. And btw the revs werent bouncing like u would see from hitting a rev limiter past redline. Thanks in advance for replies!

it may have to do with the electronic throttle our lancers have. its a safety feature, just in case THAT happens, the computer wont let the car rev beyond red line to protect the engine (it happened to me once too). thats the only think i can think of, if anybody knows anything else, please let me know. drive hard.
