request for how to do timing

i havnt seen a sticky or thread on how to do the timing which is strange

but im trying to do it now and im a little confused.

i have this motor and what im rele doing is checking it to make sure its right but if u take a look at the pics u might say its not but then again who would no.

the motor has run.....it was done by a shop.....cam is stock......has a valve kit in it...

but...for some reason when the cam gear lines up, the crank sprocket is about a tooth away and on the plastic cover, it reads near the 10 mark

Does that mean its been degreed or its off or what? it is a fully built motor so degreeing it would have been an option......the time i had it idleing, it seemed fine. problem was i couldnt rev it and it would eventually die.
the crank sensor must of gone bad bc there was no spark after that and when i took it off it was all rusted and what not.

take a look at the pics and see what u can add to this please.

I don't get the plastic cover part....

But, anyhow, the guide in the manual seems to be pretty spot on for how to do it I think. Did you read through that and it was still confusing? As far as it being off, it doesn't look off to me, but I can't see it all that well.

Timing looks fine to me. There will be some slack in the belt that might make it look off a tooth. If you manually rotate the crank do the timing marks line up during each TDC?

Saw this guy go through the whole process and list out the sizes on the tools and everything, all pretty sweet. I'd go with this.
