Blacking out tail lights and de-badging

Ok so I just blacked out my rear lights so I figured I would give everyone some do's and dont's. First, I used the Night Shades product. It is available at any local auto shop and averages about $12 a can and I only used about half a can on my 09 ES.

Basically, I started by removing the outer lights in the rear.
2. I removed the plastic removable rivets holding the lining up on the trunk lid
3. popped the bulbs out and unscrewed the rivets from the trunk lid (all 3)
4. cleaned each light one at a time
5. did a light even coat each time on each light allowing about 50 minutes to dry
SIDE NOTE-I messed up on the last light and tried for about 2 hours to scrape the shade off without messing up the housing. Finally I got tired and sprayed some more of the night shade on and started wiping the old product off. IF YOU MESS UP LET IT DRY AND THEN SPRAY THE NIGHTSHADE ON THE AREA DESIRED TO BE CLEANED AND WIPE IT IMMEDIATELY. Then use goo-gone to clean up after you are done and then clean it off with windex or whatever your using to clean with.
6. I did 2 full coats and then re-installed them easy peasy.

So it has also finally got warm enough to de-badge the mitsu. I personally used just regular store bought goo-gone.
1. cleaned the rear trunk lid
2. used q-tips to apply the goo-gone around the edge of the badges that you wish to remove.
3. let it sit for maybe 15 minutes and then use a credit card or if worse use a razor blade however USE AT YOUR OWN RISK!!!!!!! If you are not careful you WILL SCRATCH YOUR CAR BE WARNED
Also I would recommend doing this in 70 degrees+++ tempatures

Again I am sure you guys may know this already but I'm just trying to put some of the stuff out there that I am kind of teaching myself so as to help others.
Thanks in advance guys and if you have any questions feel free to hit me up.

I carefully used a heat gun and peeled them off and used goo gone to cleanup any leftover glue.

Hair blow dryer + dental floss.

They floss right off without the risk of damaging ur paint or the emblem.

Dental floss makes sense lol, wish I would have thought of that before I spent an hour and a half doing it with my debit card lol.

Instead of floss try fishing line. I used it and it worked great; a lot stronger than floss

I debadged the trunk mitsu and lancer with my bare hands when the temperature was over 100 degrees in the summer. no damages done kept the diamond emblem.

also... is it worth using the night shade to smoke out the taillight? i have the trunk part of the light smoked out with the smoke film, but I can't do the outer lights because of the tricky corners of the taillight due to my lack of skills... has anyone smoked out that part with the film? how did you do it?

I used the taillight armor film to do my taillights. It is by no means professionally done, but I just went for it and it didnt turn out too bad. It will help to have someone assist you. It is not as clean of a finish like night shades but it gets the job done with less work and its not permanent. Good luck if you go for it

@2009_4B11 Yes you can use this on your dealership badges as well.
@ub.chae like ajop said the film is not permanent so if you go to a car wash for instance or have any type of element outside of your control ie. weather/rain/extreme heat ect. It could cause the film to decay. Where as with the night shades it's a quite a bit more durable.

I used the same thing! night shades with two coats on tails, 3 on third brake light and 3 on reflectors. for de-badging I used a blow dryer and dental floss then cleaned the residue with goo gone.

I didn't wet sand or clear coat them. They're still looking great.

Has anyone done a light coat with the night shade and it look good? I would like to spray them but don't want them really dark. Is it possible to remove after it is all dried?

+1

In addition, that dark of a shade would get you a ticket in my state.
