Self tinting headlights....Possible?

I was thinking.....Does anyone know how self tinting glasses work? Do they have a film that self tints when in sunlight? I thought that this would be really cool to try on headlights.....tinted in the daytime....clear for driving at night Just an idea....comments and ideas welcome

I don't know of a "Film" that would do it, photoreactive glass/plastic is used most frequently in glasses lenses..

The bad news.. The bright light from the headlights will probably also cause them to darken..

There are some products out there that use electricity to turn a pane of glass opaque, not sure about if they have anything that would turn them black or tinted.. But you can search on that. (I used to work in an industry that frequently used that kind of glass in partitions for conference rooms that needed privacy sometimes)

http://www.laminatedtechnologies.com...acy_films.html here's a link to get you started.. Like I said, as far as I know, there's nothing that comes in "colors" but do some hunting around, it could be pretty cool to see headlight covers made of a material that turned black.. Bad news.. very expensive..

I wasn't sure if the "glass" was effected only by sunlight or just "light" in general. The electricity route sounds a lil $$$ to try.

As far as I know, most of the glass available in use for glasses lenses will react somewhat to any bright lightsource.. But there's some newer technology out there that will react only to certain wavelengths of light, their used to prevent heat gain/loss in buildings that have alot of glass surface and are expensive to heat/cool however there isn't any clear info on if the material is tinted or transparent, or if the material would change color or just properties in the presence of the wavelengths..

hmmm interesting....thanks for all the info MalibuJack! Sounds like a "film" type material is not an option. I'm gonna do a search later.

I tinted my windows in my Pontiac Grand Am couple of years ago. It came out really nice. 2.5% I used a tint from wal-mart
Cheap and not fading. It's really easy but you have to patient.

Is there some product that just reacts to uv rays. I know nothing of this matter but id say if it only reacts to uv headlights wouldnt bother it. If someone could get it to work I think it would look awsome...and very functional.

I know that this isn't exactly what your looking for, but just came across this the other night. Instead the blacking-out headlights; if available, use a smoke or a translucent black film like this... ( http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/ws/eB...spagename=WDVW ). Good luck.

i doubt its a film, i wanted to do this with my winshield so that it could have it tinted during the bright days and not have the tint at night, but then i found out how much the tinted glass cost per sq.inch and lets say its not worth it
