Real Japanese plate?

For the Lancer the top number should start with a 5 denoting an engine size between 660cc to 2000cc. Anything above a 2.0 liter like a RA would begin with a 3 after the Kanji characters.

Anyway, you're not the only one sporting a Jap plate...

But i really dont know since im new here in california, i dont know if its street legal.. only see it on cars in carshows.. not on highways yet... so thats stoppin me from now.. i know its almost the same idea by havin the yellow lights if your just tryna get the looks.. so far the cops havent harassed me.. bwahaha.. Well yeah, its PIAA 3000K's but for some reason one of my sockets got burnt and melted alittle coz i think it got wet or moist.. not that bad tho, so im runin the stock bulbs again...

Anything 1x would be a truck under 2.0 liters. Currently most Jap plates have three numbers at the top but the first number is use to determine the size of the engine and type of vehicle.

The two Kanji characters represent the regional code. Kind of like a county or state on a US plate. Followed by either two or three numbers:

1x (1, 10, 100) Truck, >2.0 liter
2x (2, 20, 200) Small to medium bus
3x (3, 30, 300) Heavy passenger car > 2.0 liter
4x (4, 40, 400) Lorry, van, station wagon 660cc to 2.0 liter
5x (5, 50, 500) Passenger car 660cc to 2.0 liter
6x (6, 60, 600) 3-wheeled truck (> 360cc ?)
7x (7, 70, 700) Passenger car (660 to 2000cc) overflow series
8x (8, 80, 800) Special Vehicle requiring yearly inspection ( > 660cc)
9x (9, 90, 900) Tractor / Fork Lift
0x (0, 00, 000) Construction Equipment

Privately owned vehicles > 660cc will be white background with green text
Privately owned vehicles < 660cc will be yellow background with black text
Commerical/Business > 660cc will be green background with white text
Commerical/Business < 660cc will be black with orange text

The small character next to the numbers is a Hiragana prefix and finally the four numbers.

Long explanation short, your CRX which probably has an engine smaller than 2.0 liter will be white, green text, start with a 5 on top.
