performance winter tires

For those of you who race rallycross, you're familiar with what I'm gonna ask:
Is there a good all season or winter tire that has an aggressive* tread pattern that performs really well in low traction applications? For example, I liked the feel of my Toyo FZ4s last winter when we actually had snow and ice, and they gave good hydroplane resistance. But, they're getting on in miles (thanks to some autocrossing ) and they had TERRIBLE stopping capability when it was damp or wetter out. I know I'm not gonna get the road hugging deathgrip that my Azenis provide, but being afraid to apply the brakes for fear of sliding is NOT cool

So:
* Good snow and mud traction are essential.
* Good wet braking is essential
* They can be a dedicated winter tire because they'll be coming off again in about March (Azenis have at least another season in them) and will probably be on until the rubber gets too old and starts to crack anyway
* I'm not looking for "real" rally tires because these need to get me around town and whatnot, and I don't have that kind of money anyway

Websites with rallycross reviews/ inclement condition racing reviews/ personal or anecdotal experience (my buddy races on XXXXX and love them) is really what I'm looking for.

* Aggressive tread pattern as defined by the SCCA rallycross rules:
Aggressive all-season tires are defined as a tire with tread gaps greater than .225 inches that run horizontal to the tread.

Thanks all!!!

My roommate and a coworker both got the Dunlop Winter Sport M3. They are awesome performance winter tires and in my opinion, the best performance you are going to get out of a winter tire. Neal might chime in with a Blizzak model, but don't believe the hype , just messing Neal .

If you have deeeeeep pockets, you can check out Nokian WR. You can get these from most local tire shops.

Any opinions on the Dunlop M3s?

the alpin PA2s looked good (3rd on the Tirerack's list of buyer recommendations), and the Nokians, too (but I couldn't get pricing without calling the dealer, so that made me think all I'd be hearing is "cha-ching!" )

When I bought Nokians for my Civic back a few years ago (14 inchers) they were $88 a piece mounted and balanced.

Oh, and my roommate drives his S4 with the M3s and loves them, and my co-worker drives a Maxima, drives like a madman, and loves them.
