help with spring install
I just got my tein springs and i got the struts off the front and I cannot get the bolt of the top of the strut to get the spring off...do you have to have an impact gun i dont have one...i dont have a spring compressor so i am careful to not let the head fly off and hit me...i am using the right size socket and everytime i turn it the shock turns and i cant get my hand throught the spring to hold it..any way to get this off? thnx
hey send a PM to KMcW he has the teins installed and he did it himself. In the email he sent me he said it took 2-3 hrs. and he used a spring compressor...also he made a point of only doing one wheel at a time. I'm sure he'll give ya some pointers.
You need a impact gun to take that 17mm nut off the top of strut.

bro i just did spring install i'll post up exactly what you need to do .. gimme a sec.
k like i was saying
k i got the progress spring... same process for tien...
YOU NEED A IMPACT WRENCh...
ka after you get the struts off.. GET A SPRING COMPRESSOR from pepboys... $53.96... then get over to homedepot.. rent an electric impact wrench for $27.08....(cheaper than renting air compressor, works just as well...while at home depot pick up 3' of 5/8"vinly hose and 12 plastic tiedowns... one can of flat black paint.
now USE the damn spring compressor before you put a hole in your head i'm serious..,....DEAD serious.
k ... now... look at the three small holes at the top of that cap thing on the struts.. they must be lined up the same way
now use the 17mm deep socket (comes with rental wrench) and go to work on that bolt...
a piece of advice.. don't get pissed at it.. cuz if you get angery and f-up the treads on the shaft or you'll be looking for the tien struts as well!
push down slowly on the wrench til you hear the torque clicking on the the cliking is a good thing it means it is losening those bastards of a bolt.
remove spring.
before putting the tiens in i suggest cutting the vinly hoseand using them as sleeves for the ends of the spring.. it helps with noise reduction. and settles the car easier and gives a lil cushoning too
about a 4" sleeve will do if you have problems fitting it on cut it make the sleeve wrap around the spring ends and use plastic tie downs to hold it down ..
next
cut bumpstops if needed(i dunno if tiens need cutitng of bumpstops)
now slap on the springs..(compress the tien springs if needed) obviously aligning it to the groove that stops the spring form slipping around at the base of the strut .
put top cap back on remembering to align those small holes at the top with the bottom ones..... tighten bolts.. again don't get pissed if it seem it's just spining the shaft. you need to push down very slowy and evenly.
a tip for geting that nut to go back down:
the cap you had to align....use that to push up a little while you push down on the wrench do this stuf very slowly man i can't say that enough. the restriction forces the nut to grab the thread and move down ..
then you repeat. with 2 people working on a strut each struts should take about 20 mins each .
when you all done wash the spring compressor clean the spray the black parts of the pepboys compressor with the pain you bought. then return it..$53.96 saved.
then return the home depot rental stuff. (if you know someone with a impact wrench even more saved.
it cost me total about $35 when i was done. =) i might have forgottne somthign.. but i trust someone who has installed spring will have more to add.. PM if you need more details.

will post pics of my progess drop on a different thread. .. the thing is sweet no noise at all had to force the car to make a noise.. lol 20 over a nice size speed bump will do it..(yes i'm an ***, but i was expectly rolling thunder, so no noise lol was kind of disappointing know what i mean ?!?!?) .. oddly i didn't feel the bump to much just heard a horrible sound .. sounded parts were falling off like crazy for 2 sec... but everything is absoluetly fine
any ways... i have a question that might be "on topic". i did this stuff and did not do an alignment. should i go get alignment done? sould i wait 2 weeks for the springs to settle then do it ? or not bother at all since i don't feel a pull to the left or right, right now??

Here is what I did Get a deep 17" socket and cut out a section of the middle about 5/8 of an inch from the bottom of the socket. Then stick a locking plier in the space that you cut out and grip the top of the strut while you turn the socket. Here is a pic of my custom socket. Hella lot cheaper than an impact gun and compressor.
i think i put a curse on my self after writing that post earlier to night, i got in my car and left from work... and then i HEARD EVERYTHING ! grrrrrrrrrrr now it's annoying me. every single crack on the road sounded like a shotgun blast to my wheels. WTF is up with that..... hey could atmosphere temp have anything to do with it ???? i looked at the springs nothign looks out of place... i just got off the phone with my friend... and from what he describes i think he put the rear springs up side down he insisted the way he put it in is the only way it would fit.. he said the more compressed side of the spring is at the tops i could have sworn that part is at the bottom can anyone confirm?
hmmmmmmm k this **** is pissing me off.
this morning i drove around for 2 hours getting stuff for oil change. 4 auto stores had nothign for lancer .... any ways... all this morning..... not a peep on the road. only hard bumps and only then i heard from front left. ... maybe cuz it's closer to me?!?!
anyways.. after leaving from work tonight i almost felt like driving off the highway or just slaming the f-ing car into a wall to shut that f-er up ... gad damn the rear left was constantly rattleing .. not loud but with out radio on you definately could hear... my friend is going to drive it and i'm gonna sit in the back to hear whats goign on... are my progress springs possessed??? ROB ( RRM ) i'll prolly want you to take a look at the install we did ... think you can help me out hear bro... ???
