Question Tire difference

OK, my stupid *** just thought to check the vendor board for deals and I found one. There are some Toyos I want to buy. My only concern is that I'll be going from 195/60s to 195/50s and we have some ****ed up roads around here. How much will the difference matter when I hit potholes? I really don't want to be buying new rims anytime soon. Thanks.

DJ

EDIT - Damn. I apologize for putting this here instead of in the tire/brake/suspension forum. I wasn't thinking.

It will definately be a ruffer ride, but not to bad. 50's are a good compromise of looks, performance, and ride quality. Just be a little cautious. I used to deal with 40's on an 86 gti lowerd 2" in NYC

50 profile should be fine and safe, but keep in mind that size will throw your speedometer and odometer off by I think 5-10% I'd see if they have a 205/50/15, 215/50/15, or 205/55/15

They do, but I'm thinking cost. These tires fall within my budget. But maybe I'll save up the extra $100. I'm just more worried about my rims. Screw the speedo - I drive too fast anyways.

oops, I meant to post this link for you, it compares tires sizes so you will see how far your odometer will read. It will also put a few more miles on it than it should, but you could always get that recalibrated. At least with a smaller diameter tire, you will get a little better acceleration and improved handling. Might lose a tiny bit of your gas mileage and top end though.

That's how I was able to post it just now. I saw it in a thread on this forum over a year ago and put it in my favorites. I look it up almost every time someone asks me a tire question.
*special thanks to whoever first posted this link on the Lancer forums, can't remember your name but you're a genius!

brian, just out of curiousity im wondering why you recommend 205/50, 205/55 over 195/55's? according to the calculator the 205's are 1.7+ faster when a 195 is .1 faster. anyway im just wondering im still trying to figure out this whole tire wheel combination thing...

also i'm having a hard time deciding...im getting Rota 15x7's and im trying to find out which size tire i should get??? any suggestions?

[sorry to jack your thread blacksheep]

You're calculating for the ES model, which has a smaller diameter stock tire than the OZ, which we are discussing. Either way, I would try to get 205 or 215 width tires, because that's what gives you better grip and allows a lower profile than stock.

And I would say 7.0 because that is the optimum rim width for 205-215 width tires. Rom width just helps handling when properly matched to tire width.

Just remember to stay within 3% in total diameter (bigger or smaller) This will keep the speedo and computer from freaking out.

Let me ask are up sizing wheels too or you sticking with stock? If you are staying with stock, it is best to stay as close as possible to the stock size. BTW, I am a Toyo dealer too.

Tswift, if you recall my PM, you're the person I'm thinking of buying them from. The main reason I'm leaning towards the 195/50s is that they're $66 a tire but pretty close to stock size. Also, you don't seem to carry 195/60 in the Toyo FZ-4s. No, I love my O-Zs, I'm sticking with the stock rims.

PS - looking like a 6% difference from stock diameter...
