Rear Drums and when to replace?

I'm getting ready to replace the pads on my front disks, probably going to get slotted rot's as well..

I'm curious about the rear drums though. I've never had rear drums before.. how do I know when they need replacement? will they sqeeeel like disks?? Do I replace the shoes or get drums and shoes?

how many miles can I put on it?

Thanks..

From what I hear, your drums will last 2-4 times as long as your front discs. Mitsubishi estimates 60k for the rear drums if I recall correctly. If in doubt, get a free brake inspection at Midas. It will tell you what percentage is left on them.

Or just carefully remove the drum and see what the pads look like. They last pretty long, as most braking is done in the front (cuz most braking is done while moving forward, etc.).

As for signs of wearing out, I only have an '89 Beretta as experience. In that case, the sign was "horrible metal on metal grinding whenever the brakes are pressed." Hopefully you'll catch it a little earlier than that, but you probably have a while, as they tend to last forever.

Well Seemingly i live in NEW york, and my car is about to hit 30,000 miles. I've changed my brakes about 3 times already. Here in NY it's alot of stop and go traffic, so alot of brake wear.

But anyways, my real question would be, does the lancer and the mirage share the same rear drum brakes? are they the same size and would they fit. Cause i've gone everywhere to find replacements cause i know mine are gonna have to be changed very soon. The only place i seem to find them is the dealership and they are pretty expensive. So i wanna get them myself and I'll take care of the job myself... any feedback please...
thanks

i think its possible, but your looking at a pretty hefty job, it is a lot easier to put in bigger rotors/pistons/calipers on a spot that already has them, obviously, but replacing drums, thats tougher, a lot of custom work. honestly, the lancer doesn't need rotors in the back. if your doing it for show purpose, i can understand why. but it wont come cheap. and i doubt you could do it yourself.

just fyi, run a search, i found a great link once to another forum where a guy replaced all of his rotors on i THINK a mirage or civic, and i dont remember if he had drums on the back or not
