Flywheel.... interesting

I got this off RPW's site and it kind of changes my mind about getting a lightened flywheel. Also if you do have a lightened flywheel, give your opinion on this statement....

Flywheel Upgrades

Carbon Steel Flywheels.

RPW manufactures a range of upgraded flywheels for all Mitsubishi, Proton and Hyundai vehicles on specific order. Lightening of the flywheel is a proven performance increase and has been widely utilised in many forms of racing. But one thing we are seeing now days is many factory flywheels are no longer the old solid 1 piece of heavy metal. For example the new Lancer 2.0 flywheels are a is already a factory super light unit utilising a light weight steel thin plate bolted on with four bolts to an outer cast metal mass of flywheel. Essentially almost a flex plate onto an outer flywheel. Because of this design there is little chance of making a unit any lighter, and for no gain to boot.

i changed my clutch, and bought a fidanza flywheel, i can tell you honestly that there was no performance gain, however the stock flywheel weighs a lot more if you hold them hand in hand. as previously covered on this forum, it should(never been compared in dyno) help with big power, ie. turbo/sc.

only thing i noticed is the engine revs just a tiny bit quicker, but it might be me, just imagining it, and trying to get closure for the 360 i spent on it. it does rev a tiny bit quicker than stock though, and i have a feeling that when i start putting my turbo on, i'll be glad i got this.

on the other hand, our stock flywheel isnt that heavy, not like some hondas/fords that weigh like 25 lbs stock, ours only weighs like 15 stock, so it definitly isnt worth it if you arent going big power.

btw, i have rrm's stage 2 clutch kit, one word, AMAZING. its like 30000% better than the stock garbage, and to top that, its not hard to use.

Good to hear about the clutch because thats the same one I am going to get. Hopefully the flywheel will work out for you with the turbo. Also, did you replace your clutch yourself?

I replaced my flywheel on my MR because I believe the stocker is the only real design flaw in the car. Between 3500 and 4500 rpm w/ the stock flywheel, there is no engine braking. The inertial moment is incorrect, so the momentum of the flywheel just keeps the car going until the revs come down to 3500, then engine braking kicks in. Pretty scarry jamming the car down into a corner and have the engine fighting the brakes. I got the Fidenza and the Exedy Stage I and everything works much better. So, better performance, but not how you'd usually expect.
