leaking gear oil

i have searched for quite a bit now and can not find the answer to this question on the forums(i'm sorry if it posted on another thread and i missed it). i drive an 02 oz rally...i had crawled under the car twice and found gear oil on the outsode of the tranny's housing...i originaly thought the seal between the block and tranny housing was the location of the leak so i put some high temp silicon on there...i checked it again and there was still a leak. this time i made sure the drain plug was in there pretty good and i am still leaking a little bit has anybody else had this problem? any suggestions on another remedy for my lancer?

I haven't had a leaking problem, but I can see where barely any seeped out and just got dirty around the seal. (between trans/engine housing). I was noticing your mods, and possibly when the clutch and flywheel was installed the seal was not properly put on and it has a slight leak. If you are sure it is leaking from where you say it is, you are going to have to take it apart and re-do the gasket or make sure everything is tight. Remember to tighten things in a star pattern.

when we installed the clutch, flywheel, and lsd we made sure to tighten it all back up in a star pattern...also, the leaking didn't start until about 5 months after the install...(atleast that's when i noticed it) maybe it is a bad seal on the gasket...any other ideas?

Do you still have the warranty? I'd take it to the dealership/speed shop if its really causing you that much grief, I'm sure one of the two will have encountered something similar.

alrighty, this thread has gotten old now but before it is burried i have one last remark...i think i have fixxed the problem...i made sure all the tranny bolts were torqued down (which they were), changed gear oil, resealed the bottom of the gasket with silicone, and somewhere in the midst of that the problem was fixxed....so if anybody else experiences this problem down the road maybe that will help, and possibly save time before you go cracking that tranny off to change the gasket

Yup if its leaking, its the seal. No doubt about it. You have to have the gasket perfect on there with all the garbage cleaned off the metal. Then tighten down to factory specs, or until you get full gasket crush. Anything less, it will develop a leak. Also, if you notice it starting again, the nuts could be backing off, in that case you would want to use a locking nut. Those will never back off. (flex-lock or ny-lock nuts)

^^^you would notice if your slave was leaking, i had this problem and i just bled it, but the symtoms for a leaking slave cylinder are the clutch begins engaging lower in the pedal path. you can check out some more about it on this thread if you think that it could be a leaking slave.https://www.evolutionm.net/forums/sh...d.php?t=145703
