Transmission service advice

My 3rd gear synchro is getting a little out of wack lately and Mitsubishi is replacing it under warranty. I got a little lucky there as I'm only 1600 miles shy of my drivetrain warranty expiring.

Anyway, they're going to replace it probably the week after next and have the whole tranny in pieces to do so. Replacing the clutch at this time then becomes a parts-only expense. They said they can do it for $450 for the Mitsu clutch if they take it off and find it's getting thin. I can also get the Road Race stage 1 clutch for under $400 shipped though if I just plan on getting it in time.

My question to those that have replaced their clutches from wear is, should I expect that a clutch with almost 60,000 miles on it is nearing it's end? I'd rather not spend the money, but obviously getting the work for free is a tough offer to pass up. How long have other people's clutches lasted? Mind you, I'm wasn't new to stickshift when I got this car and I've never been sloppy with it. It's still grippy enough for all intents and purposes, but I wouldn't mind a firmer grip either.

So do y'all think it's worth throwing some money RRM's way for the stage 1 clutch or waiting until they have the tranny apart and hoping there's another 30,000 miles on the clutch. It's tempting to just go for it, but if I can get another 30k out of this, then it's really better for me financially to wait.

My clutch already is crap and slipping.. and I only have 27k miles on it. I don't really drive it hard either. I'm actually going with the WORKS stage 2 clutch and lightened flywheel. BTW.. I have a 2003 lancer and I have a 100k mile powertrain warranty, not 60k.

My car has the same clutch at 66300 miles as of this morning. I have no slipping on the clutch, but then again I dont know how many times you folks are laying rubber. I have only layed rubber twice. Also, the olny time I stomp on it is in second gear getting on the highway.

my stock clutch is just under 60k, and is still holding strong, but i have heard of some lancers clutch going out at as low as 25k. whether they run it or not. its just the type of clutch that mitsu uses.

Yea same for me.. I don't drive my car that hard. I don't know what it is. I've heard of a bunch of people with the same problem as me. There are discussions about it all over these forums, with evo's too. I think there were just a bunch of clutches mitsu put in the cars that were junk.. some people got good ones though.

Depends on you, not the clutch.

My clutch is fine at 56k. My buddy's is dead at 8k.

I generally agree with you. I don't slip much if any, so I would expect I'm at the longer end of the lifespan. I'm just wondering if similar drivers have reached 90k or 100k on the stock clutch. If so, I'll wait - otherwise, I'm calling RRM. Anyone have experience with lots of Lancer clutches who can perhaps give a broader view?

I don't know about the whole driver and clutch thing.. I got my car brand new at the dealer and my mom had been driving a clutch for 30 years. She even said my clutch felt funny, like it was really mushy. I took it to the dealership several times and they said it was fine, but it wasn't. Now its really really mushing and slipping terribly, especially when it gets hotter out. Now I gatta get a new clutch with my next paycheck. =/ I'm getting a flywheel too, might as well make it worth my effort while I have it all taken apart. heh.

mitsu uses pull clutches as opposed to the standard push clutch. when i recently had my car looked at because of my leaking bleeder valve, my friend at the shop found it unusual, and said that pull clutches dont typically last as long.
