Ok so I'm taking the chance of asking a stupid question, but I thought if anybody had a quick answer it would be you guys. I don't know if its always been this way and I just haven't been paying attention .. or if this is something that gets worse with time but... I realized that my lancer (automatic) changes gears EXTREMELY late. It waits until about 4k RPM's before it will shift gears and it drives me krazi. I know that when you drive the car for the first time, it adjusts to the way you drive it and memorizes it. I bought my lancer new but it was the demo car at the dearlership.. so I'm sure ppl were killin it while they were testing it. So my question is.. is there a way to reprogram the computer so that it shifts gears faster?

You can always reset the ECU and start the learning over. Disconnect your battery for 15 minutes, reconnect, let it idle for ~10 minutes, then start to drive nicely. It should adjust and re-learn your driving style.

 

and when you reset the ecu it will take a couple of days to learn the shifting so dont be surprised if your drivin down the road and it doesnt shift the way you want it to . especially with passing and hills like that...

 

yeah, disconnect the battery

 

when the battery is disconnected, pump the brakes a few times till they get rock hard. that will drain and extra charge and avoid you having to wait longer to start the learning again.

ummm, i drive a 5spd but i guess you could say it helps since i need to reset my PB ECU with every new mod and/or when the weather changes like 30-40 degrees from when i originally set it...either way

 

It always just shifts depending on how hard I'm driving it. It does not shift at the same place everytime.

Also, if you want it to shift early, just take your foot off the gas and lots of time it will shift to the the next gear.

 

It'll definitely effect your gas mileage if nothing else. Don't expect huge gains from this. Remember, you're just changing shift points.

 

hey Zlancer .. when u say after letting the car idle to drive "nicely" - what do u mean? do u mean slowly? shouldnt i drive fast to teach the car to shift gears faster?

Just don't floor it or punch it for like 15 minutes, and try to drive under different circumstances like stop and go, highway, on ramp, off ramp, things like that so the ECU can learn the different conditions and create the map. After that you can drive like a krazi woman

 

The automatic is not a programed shift. Its learns from how you drive. so after that 15min you need to drive it like you would anyother day. that way it learns your shift points. Other wise it doesn't quite know when to shift.

 

just for the hell of it once you are done with the learning process, why not stop, turn off that lancer, and restart it to ensure a clean start hahahaha let's just pretend it's a PB ECU....good luck on getting that reset.
