Do I need a new clutch?
Do I need a new clutch?
I went to the drag strip last night but it was closed.
On the way home was bursting away from a few lights just to get it out of my system. Anyway today I noticed when I just went out that the car is hard to put in gear.
Is this a sign of needing a new clutch? I changed the gear oil like 3-6K ago so I know it couldn't be that.
I'm at 76K now and have numerous passes on my stock clutch.

whoa....76k.....probly.....thats a lot on a stock clutch considering ur modified and goto the track....i would say yes.....it might also be the throw(sp?, im retared) out bearing...usally the sign of a bad clutch is it slips, like u have to give it more gas to get it moving...like a not catching sensation.....but 76k i would go ahead and change the clutch regarless....that way ur not stuck out somewher.
Cool
Don't get me wrong though...the clutch still grabs. I can still chip 2nd if I please but today I just noticed that the gear selection was harder.
I'm going to see what my options are clutchwise. I've had a sneaky suspicion for over a year that it was going. Ever since I moved and was trying to drive the car up onto a trailer and burnt a little too much clutch.

yeah....i have the ACT Stage2 and like it......got a little more than i need but i dont have to worry to much about burning it up or sliping......and u say gear slection is hard....u mean like raceing and trying to sift between gears? cause if thats the case u might need motor mounts as well...cause ur tranny is rocking to much......like full accell....ur tranny is leaning to the back....u left of gas to shift it rocks forward....think about that. all that moving around while trying to get it in gear.
I was talking mostly about just trying to shift gears during normal driving.
When racing I'm so hyped up it would have to take 100 pounds of resistance to stop me from getting it in gear

Well, sounds like how the clutch went out last time on my 'ol Escort. Hard to get it into and out of first. Then on my way home...damn, no first gear. Had to use second from a complete stop all the way home. Awesome old thing...

What size clutch and pressure plate do the Lancers use? I dont see any listed on ACT's website for the Lancer.
Lancer's pressure plate and disc is the same as 1.8L mirage. AirQuez what causes the gears to grind? When I'm in 2nd at 6k rpm and put in the 3rd it usually has this short grind.
I know my clutch needs to be replaced but does grinding mean something wrong with synchros?

Oh NO!!!!!
Transmission grinding...Well sometimes when gearing down like 4th to 3rd I hear a highpitched grinding noise. Only under high rpms though slowing down.
Don't tell me I need a need trans
The shifting has loosened up again and is shifting fine but I have noticed this problem before where the gear shifting feels really tight and hard to engage.

plus when u change clutch get a new trowout bearing....like $70 from MITSU.....also take a trip to a MITSU dealership and talk to the mechanics on how to change it....at my dealer they showed me how under a Glant....same thing....and what needs to come off and everything.....but a run down is the...brakes,tires,everything connected to the Tranny etc....

I do think that one time I was at the track and I was doing a dry burn and the clutch let go on me. I left the light and the engine just revved high for a sec and I know the clutch was engaged. I shifted to second and eventually it caught up and then 3rd was fine, but for that brief moment in the 60' the clutch let go.

Having a worn out clutch should not make it any harder to put into gear. If your clutch is worn out you can put it into gear, it just won't do s*** once it's there. Then again I'm kind of stupid so take this with a grain of salt.
if the gear is engaged, and you continue to give more throttle, if does not seem to accelerate as quick, yet the revs kick up much quicker than usual, then that is a sign that you need a new clutch.
