03 lancer rear wheel drive
Wow....what happened to the op? He probably realized he wasn't going to get what he needed here, all the nay sayers. If you want to do it, do it. It's your car. If it goes well, then you get a one of a kind ride, if it does not go well, it's your car!
Good luck with the build though!
Good luck with the build though!
Okay, let's flip the engine. Many problems: wire harness extension, power accessories relocation, and redoing the mounts for engine and tranny.
Next: where are you going to get the rear diff and other stuff? Evo parts . . . good luck asking the wrecker for those parts cheap. Another way: find and hybrid rear suspension from a S13 or 300Z . . . they are abundant and slightly cost effective.
Finally: Under 140 crank HP RWD, it's going to be a dog to drive. Drive a S13 w/ stock HP more than 140 crank HP . . . it's nowhere better than driving a S14 w/ mid 150 crank HP.
BTW: If you think you can ask any fabricator to do it for you w/o you doing the actually R&D legwork, you are kidding yourself. Also, you better have payed off your car.
BTW: how much will this cost? a mere 1 grand? Or Prench would say, "It's EASY"!!!

I can do nothing but wish this guy luck in what he wants to do. If there is a will to do something, then there is a way. Granted sometimes the "way" may cost a bit of money, but sometimes that is what it takes to get what you want.
What's the breaking point on the cost? Is he letting the shop/fabricator do all the R&D work? I'm telling you they aren't going to do it. The person has to do ALL the R&D legwork and math . . . yes, math. This isn't legos.
I guess since this thread started back in November he didn't make his one week deadline. That being said, I can clear up a couple of items that were mentioned.
As for the Ford Focus, it was Kugel Komponents out of La Habra, CA that created a BOLT IN kit to install a 5.0L Small Block Ford or a 4.6L Ford Modular Engine into the Focus. Here's their website http://www.kugelkomponents.com/focus/focus.html
As for the Miata, again, credit goes to my fellow Californians...it was called the Monster Miata http://www.monstermiata.com/default.asp
To go back even further in time, what about the Sunbeam Tiger? Carroll Shelby's crew (again So-Cal...damn I miss it) took a Sunbeam Alpine 1.7L and implanted a 4.2L Ford V8...and the second prototype only cost $600 to do. http://www.tigersunited.com/
As for the $10,000 price tag that keeps getting thrown around, keep in mind that the person you are referring to took his car to a shop that, from the sound of things, didn't have any experience with this. It's far cheaper to do the work yourself IF YOU CAN. As an example, and I know the complexity is FAR less in my example, but it's just that...an example, I was quoted anywhere from $150 to $250 to have my BOLT-ON cat-back exhaust installed. I rented a lift for an hour (they charge by the hour, I had it done in far less time) and installed it myself for $4.50. Although the OP seemed to disappear, he did say he worked at a fabrication shop I believe which would lend me to assume that he'd be doing the work himself, although I hate assuming. But, since he hasn't said anything in a while we may never know.
The idea is there, and there seems to be interest, but people just get too discouraged too fast from all the bashing whenever someone gets some inginuity. That being said, one week was pushing it in my opinion, but to each their own.

I saw the Ford Focus w/ a 302 at the 2nd annual Summit Import racing in Gainesville, FL. It was FULLY spec-ed from the factory as a showoff tool. I also do believe Motor Trend had done an article on it too. If it was that awesome, tons of Foci owners would have done it. Hell, I'm willing to bet there are still more Tauras SHO owners than Foci owners w/ a 302 swap.
As for the Miata, I don't know if it's the same guy in the link. All I know it was a big deal in the late 90's from Motor Trend pimping the idea. Besides, this idea still suffers like the Foci w/ a 302 swap. If it was that awesome, those owners would have dominated the scene over DSM'ers and 240sx owners who are fast becoming extinct w/ each year . . . hell, toss in the remaining foxbody owners too.
The 10 grand price was done by TAD Motorsports in the late 90's for a mirage owner in Chi-Town. He had talked to us and explained the gist of it. Then, he just simply disappeared . . . many followed suite and failed w/ sparse winners who had the money and knowledge. This excluded some older owners who had done the swap solely for the show circuit . . . they were never on the board . . . you have seen those owners w/ Evo 5 & 6 before the the year 2000.
In Aussie, the price has been dropping since there are abundant supply from Evo 7+ flooding the market, instead of depending solely on the Evo 4-6. Despite that fact, it hasn't been a boon for US for a massive price drop.
If people don't believe me because of naivety, call or email Tad Motorsports, talk to Boe and Rock from RRE/RRM, call Sean Glazer from Extreme Motorsports, or even Mr. "Everything is Easy" Prench (j/k on the last guy). If no one goes this route for a more first hand experience, he/she is missing a lot of the overall puzzle.
Another problem: Demographics! There are a lot of talkers wanting brownie points from their peers than actual do-ers.
What the demographics of a Miragers? Lancer owners? DSM-ers? Supra owners? H&A owners? Pony car owners? Who has the most money and skill to accomplish their deeds?
This isn't swapping a platoon of motors from H&A product or a CA/SR swap for 240 owners . . . those guys can escape the price of 5 grand and under w/o too much wild performance mods on their swap.

Wow this is crazy... I started this same project 2days ago... i will make my own thread with details soon.... originally.. i just intended to do a motor swap with a 1g JDM 4G63 (i just bought the motor and the block). then my crazy azz friend that IS a mechanic with his own shop says... dude... lets make this lancer RWD.... at 1st im like nahh... then it dawned on me... that i could be the 1st lancer in the states to do this and i can launch alot faster, compete ALOT harder in drag and autoX... and if i get freaky with it drift!!!
...... details (my own thread) coming soon!

i still got my turbo for the g94.. this idea started when i was gonna move my turbo kit on a 1G g63 (swap) platform... then when i actually bought the JDM motor last saturday.. the crazy ideas started brewing in our heads... and yes it will be turbo!!.. we are TRYING to get this done before HIN Miami on dec 15th... ( lol im working so much overtime right now)... but 1st the engine must be swapped... we dropped it off at the machine shop to get it bored out
this wont be an overnight success... I have the right connections to a shop (no $$$ for labor.. semi DIY
) which helps the wallet ALOT!!.. its just alot of home work and bargain shopping needs to be done..

You got the 4G63 bored, why? I really hope you're aware that this won't make you more competitive in anything. Autox is all about the driver, you could have a corvette and still lose to a civic. It also won't help that much in drag since, again, driver's skill comes into play. My brother in-law has a 600 hp firebird and he can't beat a sunfire off the line. For a show car it's a great idea, but I can't understand why someone would do this to their daily driver. Personally I'd take the money I would spend doing this and buy a car that is already RWD, a lot less headaches and all my parts wouldn't need to be custom-fabbed (if you plan on drifting you'll need a LSD but who makes an LSD for a RWD lancer?).

DSM /evo parts (tranny ecu axles ect ect) will be used... if i wanted to drift it would be a dsm lsd.. then i have to buy a RWD conversion kit from Buscher (they already converted 8 evos to RWD).... as for a daily driver... I have a bone stock Mirage too
there are alot of DSMers who bore out their engine parts....
Again, why did you bore out your engine? It's fine to say that it's common, but what's the reason for it? It sounds like it's going to be a massive project, I hope you've done your homework.

It's definitely a massive project.... 3 strikes against me already
1. its an engine swap... Theres Only been 3 done on these boards.. a G63,g64 and a g69... i'll be the 4th swap ; but 2nd to do a g63.... So we know that this is a do-able task.
2. I bought this car as fagomatic lol.... We're SHOOTING for a manny trans... (tranny swap never been done on this board due to "DUDE trade in your lancer for a ralliart")...
3. Changing the drive train to RWD.. this depends on #2... just need to install the buscher conversion kit... hopefully the gas tank doesnt get in the way...
the homework is being done as we speak... as for what parts we need.. the home work is done... now as of how to install it.. my mechanic buddy has been doing swaps and worked on mitsu's (dsm's especially for 6 yrs).. he knows his stuff its a learning curve for myself though...
i already have the lancer service manual on cd.... ill be looking for a dsm / evo service manual tonight when i get home
lol instead of bored.. i should have been more specific & said port n polish.. its all done for more air flow plus the machinist is cleaning it out... and it was free.. my friend sends the machinist customers from his shop all the time so.. it his way of paying a lil something in return.
