Question CVT Performance?

First off I want to know how everyone feels about the new CVT's? What do you feel are the good and bad features. I don't really know much about them. Im a 78' Camaro type guy. My girlfriend and I just got a 09 Lancer ES Sport, Sun and Sound Package and I want to modify the hell out of it. So any suggestions will be considered and appreciated. My main question is there any performance parts or plug-ins that can increase the performance of the tranny with out braking my pocket? My first modify is going to be a air intake and then a performance chip. Thanks in advance for any and all suggestions.

No tranny performance mods. There are not really "chips" out there right now for our car, but there will be something like them soon (See timing control module thread). The best thing that you can do at this point is to read as many threads as you possibly can before making decisions. You will find a lot of great info about your tranny and mods for your car.

Welcome!! PA represent!!

it depends..if you have the pattle shifters good..if you dont then eh..its iffy if i would go all out with performance mods..there are advantages and disadvantages of a CVT every CVT person will tell you the same thing low end power. CVT loses a lot of low end power compared to the MT car. however that power loss isnt throughout the entire power of the car. when i first got my lancer a while back..after i broke it in a did a run Vs a MT lancer...from a dig yeah the MT would win..but then from a 40 roll it would be neck and neck..i would maybe have a couple of inches at that point its about finding the sweet spot for shifting and whos the better driver. but when i was in sports mode and went from 2nd to redline and then switch to D mode holding the pedal it held the RPMS high and i started to pull on him. got about half a car up before shut down..

so there are advantages and disadvantages of having a cvt

I want my Lancer to be a piece of eye candy along with being dangerous on the street. Its all black, Im getting 20-25% tint done when I get my taxes back, I want to get HID's for it, the black tail lights, and many more. I have the looks down but the engine is all new (Jap?) to me. I want it to be one of those cars that look to pretty to be fast then all of a sudden Im gone. But yet I want it to be minimal on having to take it to the shop to get the work done. I know I might be asking much but I can do the basics on the engine especially with how to videos everyone has on you tube these days. Now if there is something that goes in the engine that make a big change then I would see what a shop would say. Thanks again for all input.

If you want performance, you should've got the 5speed instead. Easier to mod. Saves yourself the headache.

CVT is still being learned.

Call RRM and ask for Rob, talk to him about the CVT turbo. I THINK it is finished but I dont have any confirmation on that. Works flash will help the car a bit as well as the RRM piggy, header, exaust, and intake you want to get. The new plug and play box from RRM sounds promising also. When it comes to motorsports companies you wont find any better service than RRM. Send Rob or Brian a PM and I'm sure they will help you. They have a few CVT specific options.

So far since I have been on here thats all I have heard about is RRM and I would love to do work with them. I was on their sight and I seen the ECU piggy, I WANT IT!!! I was thinking maybe after I get the intake and then I'll get the piggy then header and exhaust. Every person that is either involved with them or has worked with them has nothing but good things to say. By their messages it also looks like they have the Lancer enthusiast in mind! Thank you for your info. RRM keep doing the good work you do. Once I have some money I'll be getting in contact with you.

I've been on this site for a few months now and love the tons of information I've gained. Yes Road Race Motorsports are the best in the country. I've ordered a few items from them and they have been great. I ordered a brake package upgrade from Rob and It didn't fit. He made good on my credit right away and replaced the items with other mods. I have the same model as you, but I think you might have the '09 ES. There's not much different between the two, except for you have a 2.4L, and I have the 2.0L... I started with the RRM SRI, RRM Pulley and the MagnaFlow exhaust. Those three items have added a little more power and a ton more fun. I suggest you start there... I've decided not the change anything cosmetic until I'm pushing out more power. In the next couple weeks I'm installing the suspension bar upgrade from RRM, here's the set for you:

I'm also installing the upgraded rear sway bar from RRM. Sometime after Spring I'm buying new rims & tires, and the coil over upgrade from RRM. Along with the motor mounts...

RRM Rocks... God Bless America

^ only 09 GTS have the 2.4 ES and DE have 2.0

also to the OP i wouldnt recommend spending the 240 or however for RRMS SRI, definitely look into the injen CAI and other companies

RRM makes good products but dont focus just on them when theres other options, do your research to see what fits you

I am working on a review for something called Sprint Booster, I had the chance to try it out on my CVT, and the experience put a big smile on my face.

Its exactly what the CvT needed, a nice kick in the pants on every throttle press.

i will publish in my blog by tomorrow after the dyno day event

the only way your going to get any substantial gains is the turbo. Every other mod is going to be very minimal but will sound much better. I cant wait until i can afford a turbo kit for my lancer
