So, I was trying to change out my transmission fluid the other day, and when I was trying to find the tranny filter, I opened the side of my transmission only to reveal the planetary gear. I've tried putting the plate back on, but it wont go in all the way. How should I go about putting it back in? Or whatever...

 

take it to a transmission shop. it may never go back together. my friends and i have taken apart a few transmissions and were never able to get them back together correctly

 

Sounds like you pulled the extension housing off and what you saw was the differential/pinion gear. Even if you did get it to go back together, the case would leak forever because it uses anaerobic sealent, not a gasket, between the case sections, and one this is disturbed it will no longer seal. I suggest you have the vehicle towed to a transmission shop, where they will have to remove the entire transmission and reseal it. Expect about a $1500 bill.

 

Or take half that money and buy a bunch of tools to do it yourself.

 

Well, that's what many of us would do. But remember, this guy obviously isn't familiar with automatic transmissions-- he pulled the extension housing looking for the filter.

couldn't you get another transmission for less than that?

 

i got a used trans for my 03 oz off an 04 oz for 500 bux with 65000 miles on it. as complink said above it mite be a better thing to do.

check out www.car-parts.com and type in all the make/model/year/etc. and it will come up with used part int eh area you specify. thats how i got my trans.

 

but why would he change the trans?
he'll still have to get it installed.

Installation cost + trans > Installation cost + put the **** back together

Meaning it's cheaper to get a mechanic to remove the trans, bolt it back together, put the trans back on the car, than it is to

Buy a trans, get the mechanic to remove the old one, put in the new one.
The transmission will be removed, reinstalled no matter what option he goes with. Why would you add the extra cost of another trans is beyond me.

 

well i guess it depends on your mechanical skills. changing the tranny shouldn't be that hard to do yourself.. now the insides are a different story. and like you said... get shop manuals

Either way your spending more $$$ or spending some time under that car.

 

when i changed trans we had it in and out in 3.5 hours with a case of beer. its not that hard to do. it literally drops right out when you have allthe bolts out. and when your in there upgrade the motor mounts as well cuz its A LOT easier to do it then , than to do it later.

 

look at my earlier post in the beginning. some transmissions never go back together correctly and then you have to do it allover again. i was looking at rebuilding my old one, but when i got weighing my options the used one was the better choice and it saved me a huge headache of trying tofix the other one. i have worked on many dsm's in the past and tome this was just a no brainer!
