Automatic Transmission, Need Help!!
Hey guys so i got a new engine for my 2002 lancer oz rally(automatic). When i removed the old engine i left it connected with the tranny so i could clean up the engine bay. i got the new engine in fine but when i put the tranny on and got everything bolted up, the car wouldnt start. I removed my tranny and noticed that the dust shield, that sits in between the motor and the torque converter, was bent and not allowing the TC to move at all. So after that i got another dust shield and reinstalled everything and still nothing. I removed the tranny once again and noticed that the bolts were still scrapping against the motor and not letting the 4 bolts from the TC to move at all. Any suggestions?? did i put something in wrong or backwards?? I am new to automatics and not having a good experience with them at all lol. Also another question that might be a stupid one but once again I am not familiar with Autos, what is the flywheel looking thing between the motor and torque converter? Any help would be greatly appreciated!!

Did you make sure the torque converter was all the way in the transmission? You have to spin the tc while pushing it into the transmission. Should drop further in like 3 times before its finally all the way in. I will bet that is your problem as the tc is too far out of the trans pushing the flexplate into the dust sheild.
No it looks like it needs to go farther. If you have to stand the bell housing straight up and turn the tc slowly as your kinda pushing on it. How many times did go further in? You should hear like a clunk type sound every time it drops further in. There are splines that you can only line up one at a time and each time one lines up the tc will go further in.

They can be a ***** to get in especially after you've jammed it like that the first time. I had that issue once on a eclipse I was working on you might have slightly mushroomed the splines just enough you may not even be able to tell just by looking at it. You might have to pull the tc out and inspect the splines I had to take a file to then on that car I worked on. Its a very precise fit so the slightest thing can cause it to not go in. The round nub in the center of the tc should at least be flush with the bellhousing if not even a little further in.
Technically its a flexplate but yeah the torque converter bolts to that. If you want to pull just the engine then yes there is not nearly enough room to pull the engine with the torque converter still connected. I always recommend pulling the engine and trans out together it is actually easier and faster.
Thanks for your help, a quick question...when i first tried to pull my engine the torque converter started coming with it as I wasn't aware of the 4 bolts and the access plates.
Then I figured it out and disconnected it but now my question is that I was able to bolt it all together and I am not getting any funny sounds but when I put the car into drive, the car has very little power. I mean like i can have the pedal fully down but the car is not accelerating past a certain point....like 30-40mph. Car is running like crap overall but when I am in park, it sounds quite good, only when driving it
I am pulling a O2 sensor code (P0132) but just getting paranoid....any advice/suggestions?

Well I dont mean to scare you here but when you unbolted the torque converter and had the engine out did you make sure to seat the torque converter fully back into the transmission like I explained to the OP? There are several splined shafts inside the torque converter and to line these up you have to spin it while pushing in on it in order to make sure they are all aligned and its fully seated.
I appreciate you responding...well I never fully pulled out the TC. Before I put the engine back in, I did spin and push in and I did hear one click.
The main problem with my car now is severe misfire (P0300) which is leading to major power loss but the gears are shifting slow....like I won't shift out of first gear until around 5K rpm.
I am also getting low rpm shuddering...

Just responded on your other thread regarding these issues. Damn man some ****ty luck with this thing. Unless the car is going into a limp mode that also effects the transmission shifting I would imagine the two are separate issues.
It appears the 2 issues are related actually...not trying to TC here but the power loss is the TC...I just have to pull it out and replace it to be sure.
I consistently get a shudder right around 2K rpms. Also, I had the car in neutral in the light but when I went to go, I forgot, revved it up a bit and then before it came back to idle, clicked it in to drive and after that point, my power loss literally became power absent....worst drive home ever. From a stop, the car barely moved, it like crawled until it got out of first gear and then I could grab some speed.
My logic is that since the torque converter is not in properly the power from the engine to tranny is not moving correctly and the resistance is pushing back on the engine causing my misfires
Where does one get another torque converter from? Nothing comes up on car-part...
I see one on ebay but the guy selling doesn't know much about it...rock auto was a bust as well
