2010 GTS CVT issue
2010 GTS CVT issue
I am surprised that a transmission on a dealer maintained car would go out at 69K miles. I had no issues, was just serviced at the dealership. I went to leave work and it wouldn't go into gear, and a whine noise from the transmission, check engine light came on. This car has been dealer maintained, and has been mainly highway driven.
Towed to the dealer and was told transmission needs replaced. It just went out of warranty 2 months and 9000 miles ago. Here is the question I have, when it didnt move i checked the fluid and it was well below the add mark. Dealer told me that there was a service message about changing the stick ans lowering the fluid level due to an overheat issue. Has anyone heard of this?
Mitsubishi advised that they would cover half of the parts cost, which I honestly am surprised they didnt offer more. My cost would be 4300.00, i can get a used one installed for 3200.00. Both have the same warranty. What are your thoughts on this ?

my 09 ES popped around 60k but it was for a solenoid failure. It happened again around 80k due to over heating. When it happened I noticed my fluid level was WAY over filled. When I limped it to the dealer to check it out they said everything was in spec and I was good to go. A week later it was still over heating and I had to drive one of the mechanics myself on a 45 minute trip to get them to hear the transmission start to whine and overheat. Otherwise they would have gone around the block to try diagnose something that only happens during my 45 minute comute. My lancer's cvt was also dealer maintained and I had 2 cvts fail. Thankfully I was the original owner so I had 100k powertrain warranty.
Before I got rid of my lancer I was researching if others had my same problem. I found out that there was a recall for the cvt dip sticks. If i remember right, dealers were filling to the correct spec but mitsu sent out a tsb to lower the fill capacity and to install a new dipstick that marked the new fill line. But if the fluid was lower enough to cause overheating then it's possible that the dealer under filled it on the last cvt fluid change, unless your cvt has been leaking which is unlikely. How long ago did you get your cvt serviced?
If they both have the same warranty I would go for the used one. Assuming it'll be fully covered in the event it happens again with no bs.
