Tranny from a different vehicle

Need to find a tranny for my 03 Lancer ES 5spd

Having a really hard time finding one, seems they are rare

from what I have found out online, looks like it is the same tranny as the rally art, but the rally art has different gearing and is rated to handle more

I think my tranny is a F5M42

It also looks like it was used in 2002 for the Eclipse with a 2.4L engine

is this info corrct? should I look for m tranny using an Rally Art spec or a Eclipse tranny?

gearbox is the same, bell housing will be different (starter in a different spot), but you should be able to swap it over. also axles might have different splines, but don't quote me...F5M42 is also used for the 8g and 9g gallant, as well as the 4g eclipse, and they all have different gear ratios, depending on model and trim...swapping bell housings means splitting the case...here's a video I made to demonstrate what's involved: https://www.evolutionm.net/forums/la...-assembly.html

can I get away without having a press?

I do have wood blocks, large sockets, and a bunch of bottle jacks

You could also use a 04-06 es/oz lancer tranny. The only difference is the external slave which is better than the 02-03 transmissions. 02-03 have a internal slave.

did you watch my video? the only thing you would need a press for is replacing bearings and gears/synchros.

so the 04-06 is definitely a drop in deal? what about the bellhousing? also, you said its got an external slave, how would I address this?

trying to make whatever I do as cheap as possible, and as painless as possible as well

I just dropped my transmission again yesterday took, about 3 hours, and I have a turbo kit that has to be removed first...it's not that hard of a job...

for the previous question going with an 04-06 tranny and external slave is just a matter of getting a throwout bearing and slave for an 04-06...

I know it isn't that hard to do, it's just a matter of $ at this point... and we are still driving it....

would that mount on the outside then I am assuming? what about the hydraulic lines?

they're brake lines...the flex hose from the master cylinder should already be there, so if you need to run a new line, it should not be too bad, or you could go with an aftermarket full steel braided line...OR your stock lines might work, depending on whether it's a flared compression fitting, or a banjo fitting...

car-part.com lists a bunch of used transmissions in California for $600, you could maybe talk them down, to $500...

I actually started looking through the online search engines hen this all started. I did contact a lot of those companies directly. They have it listed on sites like that, but when you call them, they end up being a lot more, and they want like $400 for a core charge as well, and usually around $200 for shipping......

Still want to rebuild mine, just waiting on funds really. I don't know what it looks like inside, so that is another issue... There is a possibility there is some real damage, and also the possibility that these things are pretty resilient and it is fine.....

I want to know why they are different, just to learn.... I do have the FSM, so if you guys say I need to crack that sucker open, I will

looking @ another thread here... I have found that I would need this:

and

that is the arm, the bearing, and the slave

For a transmission with the "internal slave", you would only need this piece. it is the bearing, with the slave cylinder integrated...

For an external slave system, would need this, yes:

however, if the transmission doesn't come with it, you would also need;

this:

this:

this:

this:

and this:

along with the appropriate bell housing, if the one you have will not accept these parts...
