Package #1 is the ones this install writeup is for. There is one small bushing you replace with the two small pieces, and a big bushing you replace with the two big pieces.
Package #2 are the ones that go in the shifter base inside the console. For those, just take off the console and you'll see the 4 bushings at each corner of the shifter bracket. Take one out, replace it, repeat.

PS - Package 2 probably will not fit. Last I heard (and when I put mine in), they had made them a touch too large, so you'll need to file them down to get them in.
I filed for a while and then just forced them in. So hopefully they're actually in correctly...

I just installed mine today. They fit very well. The larger pair for the shift linkage needed a little force going in and on the rod, but with no adverse effects that I can see. The smaller pair slipped right in.
And holy crap, what a difference!

Hey, I just ordered the Kartboy shifter linkage bushings (package 1).
If you want package 2, I would skip kartboy and go directly to RRM. They sold me a set of "Precision" brand bushings for my shifter-housing base. They fit perfect, with no filing needed.
I have the B&M + Precision bushings installed now.... as soon as I have the kartboy shifter linkage bushings in, I'll let you know how well the 3 work together.
Blacksheep: See the little copper/brass looking insert sleeve in the center of the stock black bushings? Do you remove that and put it in the center of the new bushings? It's the tiny brass thing in the very center in this picture

Dang, I need to check this thread more often! EDIT - OK, I subscribed to it!
No, leave the copper thing out.
Mike is right about the knobs - I've had all three (and then some!).

I just installed this mod..... what a great little inexpensive mod.
I didn't think these bushings would feel much different, but they do. The lack of "squishyness" in the new bushings means the shifts are more solid and a tad bit quicker.
Basically, instead of moving your shifter lever, and having the stock bushings "squish" before moving the transmission linkage.... the new bushings are almost solid and don't "squish" under pressure. Instead, since they're more solid, the linkage is moved without any delay or "squishyness".... it's actually very nice.
My current tranny setup is : 1) B&M short shifter 2) Precision shifter-base bushings 3) Kartboy shifter-linkage bushings 4) a generic ball-style shift knob ....... I would recommend this setup to anyone, evo/oz/es/whatever... it makes a world of difference with everything changed.

P.S. Blacksheepdj: Thanks a lot for posting this how-to. Your pictures, posts, and followups have been a big help. You turned a 20 minute install into a 2 minute install, gracias.

and nominate me for guru!
I got package 2 today even though I thought I ordered package 1. Well I installed it and it is well worth it. Although I they didn't fit well but I didn't shave down the bushing itself...I took a drill and a small drill bit and drilled the rim of the shifting mount itself. You could also use a dremill also but a drillbit works too. It took about an hour and is totally worth it.
Yes the Kartboy shift knob will fit on the B&M short throw. It will fit because Kartboy used the same thread as the OEM Lancer shift lever and my stock shift knob fits on my B&M so that means the Kartboy has to fit on the short throw.
I just installed the under the hood bushings today and now I notice a werid noice when I shift certain gears. It sounds like rubber is rubing against something. I haven't really looked into it yet but I was just checking if someone else has heard this problem. It sounds like it is coming from the shifting consol itself...it could be one of the cables running to the tranny but I would have to check later.
Let me know if anyone else is having that problem.
