2nd Gear Lag

Has anyone one other then me lags on 2nd gear? I've been pondering too long let a brother KNOW! First gear is fine to redline, until I shift to 2nd gear it'll give about a 2 to 3 second lag before it'll start to pick back up..

maybe ur engaging too slow? and you fall out of the power bandwidth?
maybe you should try to go a little passed redline
or have you ever tried double clutching?

Double clutching???? why??? I dont think thats the problem. Try searching in the driving techniques section of the forum. You should find your answer there. I will agree with the first part with possibly falling out of the power vband but also dont dump the clutch, try slipping it. If you want more info go to the driving techniques section of the forum.

It's normal, and as for double clutching, I hope you were being sarcastic.

The problem is the stock ECU- It leans out right where you're shifting to (you're ending up between 2500 and 3000RPM if I had to guess) there's a little "hump" in the AFR curve that goes up to about 13.3 AFR. about 12.7 is optimal. Contrary to popular belief, if you go too lean, you do lose power. (FWIW the stock ECU under WOT goes down to about 11.8)

So, if you're concerned about needing more oomph after a shift, shift later (like when the needle is heading into the redline). Or just don't be concerned about it.

you need to fill out your mods list in your profile. If all you have is something like 17" rims and a CAI you really shouldn't be surprised that you're losing. And you're racing at a track, right?

why would a CAI hurt? or is it the combination of that and the 17" rims???

I didn't say it would hurt. What I said was (to rephrase) "if all you have is the simplest of mods" (CAI for example) you shouldn't be surprised that you're losing. Read the threads. This engine isn't the most powerful NA on the market, it doesn't respond well to mods, and in its stock form it can't handle the kind of boost it will take to be really aggressive (you need to up grade the headstuds, etc).

Anyway, as was answered in the other thread he started, the change from 1 to 2 mechanically induces lag. The gears weren't designed by the Ralli///Art race crew We'd need 6 gears making 2-3-4-5 each a little shorter and 6 a little taller than our current 5. That would be awesome, except we'd be shifting way more often than we are. Each shift takes about 0.1sec if you're fast and that adds time to your laps. Or, a taller 1st and the rest of the gears the same (I'd take a slightly taller 4th) but then we'd lose torque in 1st. So the best way to overcome the 2nd gear lag is to build the motor and reduce the mass that the engine has to move.

find your gear ratios somewhere on this site, put in your tires size, and play with it.

or there's probably gear shift post somewhere on the forum...
