Turbo Lag on Evo8 ?

The Evo is my first turbo car and I think it's great.

In various magazine articles I've seen varying descriptions relating to turbo lag. Anything from "very little" to "you can feel the turbo lag" ( as in it's quite long ).

What do people with prior experience of turbo cars think of the Evo ? Would you say it has a lot or little turbo lag ?

Also, to those who have boost gauges : Do you see boost falling of big time between gear changes ? Or does it only do down a little ?

Going from one turbo car, to another.. The power definitely seems there when you need it.. Turbo cars always will have some degree of turbo lag.. but the engine feels pretty nice before the turbo kicks in, so it makes up for the lag a bit..

Now, going from a V8 car to a turbo car.. you'll definitely notice a difference since the torque is not "RIGHT THERE" though it comes on hard and smooth fairly quickly...

Boost blows off between gear changes, and definitely takes a short period of time to spool up again.. However the effect, and how detectable it is depends on what RPM you choose to shift at.

The easy answer is it takes a little getting used to.. Lag is there, but not as significant as an other turbo car I've driven.

There was way more seat of the pants "thrust" from my talon...had stock turbo in it...but all other mods pretty much. But that doesn't mean anything. The evo accelerates much better than my talon...it is more linear. The engine in the eclipse and talon aren't as"linear" up until when the boost comes on so it would make it actually feel like my talon pulled way harder. But this is not the case. The engine response before the boost comes on coincides much better to when the boost actually comes on with the evo. Almost makes it feel seamless. But the lag is still there....it will never be totally eliminated...due to the properties of a turbo needing spool up time. But, if you shift early and bog the engine a bit and then mash the gas....give it a few seconds if you really want to feel how hard the boost actually comes on with the evo. It will push you into the recaros. ....hey by the way...where is my evo at right now....neeeeeed..a......drrrrriiiive!

Coming from a V8 (LS1 Camaro SS, 350ft lbs of torque), I can say that the Evo is NOT disappointing. I find the twin scroll to be right there. Personally, I would be reluctant to do anything that would change the current charactaristics of the engine aside from maybe getting a little more pull in the top end all the way to redline. I have driven a pretty high horsepower Supra and it was really peaky and difficult to drive. I find the Evo to be REALLY driveable and I have yet to find the car lacking anything in relation to the torque-monster I drove for 4 years.

Alota magizines from the UK say that the EVO has ALMOST near lag free turbo giving power... i was surprised..b/c its true.. of course there is lag.. but alot less than other turbo cars... why mitus chose to go wit a small turbo, boosting high i gues...smart move

I wouldn't just say the 16G is small. It is a medium sized turbo...the t-25 is small...the one in the 2g eclipse and talon and new mazdaspeed protege. It spools super fast but lacks high boost function. Again the 16G is a very very well known turbo in the DSM world. You will see people in the 11's with this turbo on the evo. You want something big...get a 20g or something like that. That will bring the turbo lag back...

I would have to say that editors that complain about the turbo lag have no idea what they are talking about. They are skewed in their perception. The EVO has very little lag, and the TT has a lot. Yet the turbo lag is al they talk about with the EVO and even though it is nothing compared to the K04 turbo in the TT (thats the 225 hp version) and nothing is every mentioned. Besides, it is a little more fun having the power come out of no where, it makes you appreciate it more.

Exactly..this 16 isnt small and is very well known to the dsm world well put. Mitsu put the t-toosmall in the 2g's for more streetable boost (not saying the 16 isnt)...I mean it hits full boost at a little under 3k but poops out before 6k, then you just start blown hot air. There is no top end with the t25. I have a big t28 from forced perfomance that also reaches full boost at 3k, very quick spool up but it also holds full boost to redline. With the proper supporting mods it is said to pull a fullweight gsx into the hi-11's, but I really dont see most of us 2g owners doing this in the real world so to say, with this turbo.

Getting a good answer to this question is going to be tough no matter what.. There is no "Standard" lag time, something that was established as "What it should be" Everyone's opinion on this subject are going to be very subjective and really depend on their past experience... Take it all with a grain of salt.. If it feels good to you, thats all that ultimately matters..
