no, they are 2 plastic shield thingy's that are attached underneath the engine bay. Although they aren't attached very well, they would be easy to loose.

awesome, yeah i'll check in the morning before i take it to the dealership.

my car's never been wrecked, never been on a dirt/gravel road, or anything like that. and if hitting a dead possum feels like my car's gonna flip, i think i'd know if i lost one on the interstate.
but the guard isn't anything that would have to be removed to replace the belt, is it?
cause if it is, then i'mma go bust down the door of the mechanic who did the belt job and make sure he didn't forget to put it back on.

i dont think it HAS to be removed, but it does get in the way a bit so i imagine the mechanic may have removed it.

alright folks. so i just got back from the shop.
there's not a mitsubishi dealership in my town anymore, but our toyota place has a mitsubishi tech, so he's the one who normally deals with my car. he's out on leave (knee surgery), but one of the techs (great guy, upfront, we get along) said he'd check out the whole list of possible issues i told him (thanks to my evom advice).
well, he comes into the waiting room where i was watching Happy Gilmore (freaking hilarious) and tells me that he's pretty sure it's the power steering pump.
price: 7-- bucks. i just heard 700 and i blanked out on the rest.
he DID tell me that it may be worth it to drive to greenville (30 miles) to get a mitsubishi tech to make sure that's the issue before i spend 7-- bucks on a pump.
so.... i guess that's it?
he said that when he turns the wheel all the way in either direction the belt locks up, and he said it has to deal with the pump. but he did tell me that it would be alright if i drove it for a couple of months till i could afford the pump and labor.

input?

So no dealers in NC? Odd... There's Dick Smith here in G'ville and Easley Mitsu. I got mine from Dick Smith, but have only been there for a free oil change and recall stuff. I couldn't tell yah if they'd steer you in the right direction with the pump failure or not.

I'm not saying he's wrong with the diagnois, but if he added that you'd might want to take it to another place (dealer) to find out for sure...sounds like he's not trying to blow smoke up your *** and ripped you off. If was just his diagnosis.

Oh, and was that plastic "shield" in place still? First, I'd replace the belt (again) and tighten it properly. Then if that doesn't fix it, then do a power steering flush. And then if that doesn't do it, then it's probably the pump. But don't go to the "stealership" for that repair, find a used unit and have any shop put it in. Hard to mess up a pump install... (though some could manage)

Hope that helps.

Since it was a rental before, I doubt it has anything past a 36k guarantee...

well... i've got whatever was left over from the previous owner on the car. but i'm pretty sure that it was actually used as a dealership rental car, so yeah...

and yeah, we have dealerships in NC, just not any in goldsboro. we did, but i guess business wasn't too good, even with the air force base here.
yeah, the belt is totally fine, i just had a trusted friend check it out. we discussed a flush, i'm gonna look into that. but around here there's a bunch of stuffy old rednecks who'll sue over anything, so i have a feeling that the tech was just trying to cover his bases.

we've found a pump for $280 (i think) and a guy i know will install it for 75 bucks, so we may go that route.

alright.. so sometime late next month is when i'm probably gonna be getting the pump done. gotta save up some money (paying off another car, already started christmas shopping, you know the drill) and then i'll be less paranoid about going bankrupt over a 3-400 dollar repair. so... i guess that's it for now!
thanks for all the advice!

that is vicious. i'd DEFINITELY have a tech look at it before dropping that kind of cash. i hope that your problem is something other than that!

Anyone on here ever have a power steering pump fail before? I did, and it just didn't stop working at different times... It was all at once (all of a sudden), and it sprayed all over the engine bay in my '95 Escort and also puddled below the car. I guess a pump can fail w/o leaking all over the place.

GREAT NEWS!
i get in my car today to go to work... and everytime i turned more than a quarter-turn of the wheel, my belt screamed.
johnnie (the tech) said that when he turned the wheel all the way in either direction it locked up. so he said it was the pump. if that's all he did, then he shouldn't have messed with the belt or the tensioner right?

and a girl @ work has been talking to her husband about it, and i might be able to get him to do the pump. he works on her eclipse all the time, and he's mechanic on jets in the air force, so i pretty much trust him.
but is the noise a big issue..?? cause now it's making me think about replacing the belt.
i dunno... i'm just totally pissed about the whole situation, and i'm kind of hoping someone rear-ends me, knocks my front end into the back end of a tahoe, and ends up buying me a new car.
then i'd have a new one (or money to put towards a brand new one), plus some $$ for pain and suffering.
