Problem with My clutch? Help please!

Hey everyone. I'm a moron with cars, but I need help. My 2002 OZ has about 39000 miles on it, and last night it started feeling really weak when I let off the clutch and gas it. The RPM's rev higher than normal, and it's just not going very fast at all. Takes forever to get up to 40 now. What could the problem be? Is it a filter thing, a clutch thing, a tranny thing? I have no idea.

Should I take this into mitsubishi?

Thanks...

Zack

i say check with your dealers service shop.
if it is a prob that is covered by warranty then make them fix. use and abuse the warranty...make them work for their money

damn..

Well, now the car is on the side of the road in Burbank, CA. When I let off the clutch and hit the gas, nothing but revving happens. I smell the smell that you smell when you mess up shifting. Damn.

its your clutch, unfortunately it seems to be burnt. as temporary measure you can adjust the pedal play by shortening the pushrod under the dash but that is if you still have some clutch left. increasing the rpm will just hasten the wear!

Thanks for the advice, but

I think I'll just get it towed over to a shop, and have them fix it. Or should I have mitsubishi fix it? My car insurance has coverage for that kind of thing, even when the warranty doesn't cover it. Only a $250 deductible...much better than paying the whole thing!

if your insurance is paying it might as well bring it to the mitsubishi dealer and still pay only the deductible.

39000 miles and already a blown clutch? You turbo the car? any bolt-ons? or just ride the **** out of it? first manual car? I'm at 19k and my clutch is going too. This is bull****. I've been driving manual cars for 5 years. Never even owned an auto, and I don't do anything but Baby it. Mitsu says it's not covered, that I'm prolly runnin' the **** out of it....

hmm im at 28,000 miles on my first stick shift and my clutch is still good. hopefully it'll last me to at least 50,000. i thought i ride the clutch too....guess not as bad as you guys do.

EDIT: 39K miles doesn't sound like an unreasonable time to change the clutch.

My clutch is eating **** as we speak, but it doesn't like boosting...regardless...

From your comments on the smell when you mess up shifting I'm assuming this has happened more than a couple times?

Btw, I doubt Mitsubishi will cover the clutch unless it was defective (which is doubtful if it lasted that long). They're not obligated to cover clutch wear.

I've got 27k, never once had a problem until last week I dumped it and the only smoke came from the clutch. When it cooled off it was fine, in my VW my clutch has been through torture and is still holding up great after over 100k.
Whats up with these clutches

My US lancer has a problem with the throughout bearing. I have 26,000 miles and when The car in in neutrel and the clutch pedal not pressed there in a awful noise, but goes away if the pedal is to the floor. Throw out bearing! Thats ok I was wanting a better clutch anyway!

Where and How Much?

I have 41500 miles on my 02 OZ Rally and I have noticied some of the same problems as Zackiechan. While mine are still very mild it would be safe to say that in time I too will need to replace my clutch. Can anyone tell me where I can buy a new clutch and roughly what it would cost me for both parts and labor? Also, is the clutch and pressure plate sold by RRM any good and if so would there be any benefits to that purchase? Thanks in advance!

What in God's name are you people doing to your clutches? Considering I have 32k miles on my car right now (ok, 31849 to be exact), I have noticed absolutely no problems with it. Engagement is still smooth save for the obnoxious 1st-2nd transition that is a commonality with these cars. A clutch on most street vehicles should last well into the 50's and beyond.
