cvt question

hey guys, i picked up an 08 lancer gts on sat.. i just have a few questions on the cvt.. im posting in the trouble forum, but i've never driven a cvt before so it may be normal... when coming up to a light in normal driving mode.. at around 25-20mph i feel like either the cvt is downshifting or is it the engine breaking? It only when im stopping at a light or something, other then that the cvt feels as smooth as can be( takes some getting used to).. my co-worker rented a caliber last year he told me that car did the same thing also..i'd just like to know what you guys have to say. Thanks.

What is "normal driving mode"? Just putting it in P? Or are you using the paddles to shift?

Guess I never noticed that happening.

Guess it's good to hear that it's normal, though.

Mine does it, too. I think it's engine braking. I like it though as I don't have to use my brakes as much in traffic.

It is normal. It's the standard setting for the CVT. Do not forget the the Lancer is programmed to learn how you drive. There is a point that it will figure out the speed you slow down to before the threshold on the brakes start to slow the car down on its own. An unbroken CVT will do this at the beginning. But once the car starts to program on your drving habits, it tends to calibrate on the average of your driving.
I noticed this immediately from the 0 to 3000 miles. There will be another change as you get in increments of 1000 miles before the car is truly broken in.
This is just my observation.

wow thx thats the sort of reply i was looking for lol.. so now i can stop worrying... I'm approaching 300 miles and i've only had the car since sat.. I drive the car like a grandma but i worry that the cvt will learn those driving habits instead of my more normal habits.. When do you guys think i can start driving the car "normally".. i know mitsu says 300 for the break in but i think thats too low, would 500 be safer to start and slowly work my way up till i hit a 1000 mi to really start getting on it so to speak

I would start between 500 to 1000 miles. Start driving your normal ways then. But do it gradually vs pedal to the metal.

Man no one pays attention to my posts or half-assed non-technical explainations and such!

That is basically what youre talking about, however this is me complaining because i cant coast *cry* and im over 3k miles and there is no change to it, its just how the car is, the pressure on the gas determines the ratio of the gear, thus how a CVT works in my terms.

hey sheep why arent my posts in the tranny forum but when i search for them with "posts by user" they show up?

i had seen your post.. now that i read it again i see that its the same thing i'm experiencing lol sorry about that..

One more thing.. when my car is in park for a lil while, after i put it in drive and start driving off i hear a "click" if you want to call it that... it only happens when i've been in park for a few it doesnt happen on the road while driving or in reverse or when i come to a stop and accelerate again.. just after i've been in park.... i didnt have the noise when i first got the car but now it does it.. is this normal? sounds as if the cvt is engaging or dis-engaging something im not sure..i guess i'll have to take it in if no one else has this problem.

Auto transmissions, and probably CVTs, too, have parking locks. It can make a noise when engaging/disengaging.

Ya know, i was troubled by the same thing when I first got the car but I've noticed lately that when I'm driving over 40 MPH coasting is very easy. I've let myself coast, put the car in neutral, then back into drive and felt absolutly no difference. I didn't notice the change until just recently and I'm at about 9500 miles now. I think as more milage is put on the car it is easier to coast; I have a CVT too btw
