Problem Accelerating - RPM's Race Up but no power change

I have an 02 lancer es (58,000 miles) with an Injen CAI, testpipe & magnafllow catback exhaust. The problem is when I push the accelerator down more than like 25% (at about 3000 RPM) the RPM's start going up higher than they should & there is no change in power. It's almost like I've put the car in nuetral. Once my speed has gone up, it seems to eventually catch up. This problem has slowly gotten worse & is quite annoying.

I've checked the coils & spark plugs & all seem fine. All plugs and vacuum lines checked for snugness. I'm thinking that it has something to do with the EGR system or a sensor of some kind.

Any Help greatly appreciated.

Really... I'm a little skeptical to say that it's def gotta be the clutch. Mainly cuz if I keep the throttle at about 25%, the car will speed up at the correct rate & the rpm's & speedometer will climb without any problems. So it really only happens if I try to accelerate too quickly. Plus I've never smelled the burning clutch.

This is because more throttle means more torque. The clutch can still hold some torque, but if you load the motor it will slip. When a clutch first starts to go you might not notice it during daily driving, but it will slip in higher gears with more throttle input.

I agree with everyone else ... it's the clutch.

I have a factory manual on CD that has the install for an EVO - it has every step that you need...I can probably create a pdf for you if you would like...I don't know if it has info for a normal lancer but I can check and get back to you if you'd like

Unfortunately it is an EVO specific manual - but I can still put it together so at least you'll see the general steps...most clutches are more or less the same once you get the transmission off anyhow - torque settings may differ and bracket locations etc...but generally they all are pretty similar - I'll try to post this later tonight (if it let's me post pdf's - if not I can either e-mail them to you or post them on our ftp site for you to grab...PM me with your e-mail address just in case I can't post them up here)

Evo specific instructions won't work, different car, different install. If you haven't done it before, I'd recommend taking it to a shop, it's not something the average person can do in their driveway.

I would agree. A clutch job is fairly advanced for the average DIY'er. It's likely that you can do it yourself, but you will need a couple a friends that can help and definitely a real manual or how to write up.

If you decide to do it yourself, be sure to have a whole weekend to spend on it. Things will definitely come up and it will not be the 7 hr job the book states. Good luck!
