Car idels high...

Once I first start up my car, my car sits ideling at about 2 and a lil over 2. Its been doin this for just about as long as I can remember so I thought it was normal...but my boyfriend says thats too high for it to always be idelin...is this somethin thats normal or is somethin goin haywire?

well when u first start your car it should idle high, especially if the A/C is on.

it's a problem if u see it idleing at 2k once u start driving and when the temperature is at normal operating temperature. when u stop at a light or something, put it in neutral and see if it still idles that fast..then u got a problem, if not it should be perfectly fine

the idle is high upon start up to allow more gas since teh air is cold. this should drop after about two minutes..if it does not try to adjust the idle down. rule of thumb is 500 rpm in nuetral of a standard and 700(in drive) for an automatic. please refer to your owners manual for proper adjustment procedures as all cars are different.

ex may have to unplug IAC motor or TPS sensor to get base idle and adjust that.

hope this helps

Its normal for the engine to idle high on initial startup because the engine is cold and the high idle helps warm up the engine. Once the engine warms up it should settle to a normal idle. When the engine is warm it is not normal to idle at ~2000rpm.

No problems with that idle. I just got in my car at 2 am after it sat in the parking lot for hours, and it idles up around 2k. Give it a few minutes and it'll drop down to 1.5k or so.
