Hydroplaing on stock 18 tires

i know this is a over-debated topic that the stock 18 is bad on snow and rain road surfaces.... it is just a warning to tell u guys what the limit of the tires really are..

As all torontian knows we had a pretty heavy rain yesterday

as i was driving @ 125km/h @11p, i was at the end of the transfer, from 401 EB to 404 NB, fast lane, 1.5km before the HOV lanes starts there is a build up of water there... the left wheels went hydroplaing for a full second... and the car drifts to the left.. lucky i did a little bit of correction with eased throttle....and i drove on the ctr lane for the whole ride

it was a scary experience......

knowing that the tires is only good in bone dry condition..what i am asking is, for the sake of knowing what really happened, will it still happen even with winter tires?

It shouldn't. The problem is the tires, not the rims.

The stock Dunlops suck.
Also, driving 125km/h in the rain is kinda dumb.

Same thing happened to me in the fall on the 400...I happened to hit a pocket of water and the car hydro'd.

The tires are **** but at this rate I'll ease up on the gas on days like that and wait till they wear down before I get another set.

Yeah take it easy in conditions like that man, 125 is definitely pushing it a tad. I wouldnt feel comfortable doing that except in bone dry conditions.

Cant wait till they are worn down either so I have an excuse to switch to some Potenza's.

I live in Missouri and we can have the worst of all weathers. I will say though that we get some pretty heavy rain here. I have yet to have an issue with the stock dunlops. In rainy weather you can drive at normal speeds. 55-60mph is normal highway speed limit here when you're in the city. You just have to adjust your acceleration and deceleration/braking times. And lastly if you see a puddle that you cant avoid. Slow down...

I will say though as far as snow/ice goes these tires are crap. Don't risk wrecking your new car and get some winter tires and steelies, or smaller rims and winter tires. Low profiles in general don't do that well in snow. In some cases the sidewalls are just too thick. Even in dedicated low profile winter tires.

I assumed he was asking whether the rims were the problem since they're the only thing that remains constant. Different tires have completely different properties and it all depends on what you buy.
