So I washed my car today like any other day, but this time I took a cloth to dry the spots the drive through wash drier leaves wet, like the back..... Noticed that the trunk has got alot of Rust spots, some of them with that nasty rust run. Bouth the car in November. Had a 2002 Pontiac Sunfire that was crap before that, but didnt rust. We'll see what the dealership says.

Havnt checked the rest of the car yet......Dont think stone ships would rust my trunk so. Toronto must use some really extra corrosive salt. Car didnt even last one winter. lol.

I've never heard of any dealer covering rock chips under warranty. This is not just a Mitsubishi thing.

Your car won't fall apart because of a stone chip on the hood. Wait about another year or two, when you have ten stone chips, then take the car to a paint shop to repair all ten at once.

Or . . .

Use one of the pens mentioned earlier, get some touch-up paint (either from the dealer or here: http://www.paintscratch.com/), and do the repair yourself.

Okay, so I got mine taken care of for free at Markham Mitsubishi. they say the rust specs are from Rail dust, a byproduct of the cars coming up by rail (i buy the story if the rust goes away). They said they used a special clay bar to get it out. All I know is that the rust is gone on my car after they did the "fallout treatment" on it. Not sure if all they did was use a touchup pen, but my car is all white again...and it didnt cost me.

Those little random rust spots that you might see on your trunk are from metal particles getting trapped in your paint and can easily be removed with a clay bar. Cost = ~$15

I'm also noticing a lot of rust spots in the truck lid, at the very bottom where it meets the bumper ... Actually on both the trunk lid and on the top of the rear bumper where they meet ... I also had an issue where the paint on the top of the rear bumper simply bubbled and then popped/ripped and I've now got a nice spot on there where the paint simply came off ... Just wondering if anyone else has noticed this at all, and if so, how the dealership responded to that ? I'm really starting to regret buying a Lancer now.

What a sec, the bumper is plastic...that can't rust. What you're experiencing is rail dust from either trains or industrial fallout. I have the same problem on my WW. Spots of rust all over it.

I'm thinking it might be due to the brake dust but when I brought it to my dealer today for their opinion, they said it's not likely due to brake dust cause brake dust is much finer and wouldn't be able to get trapped in the paint like that...not all over the car anyways. It's a fairly common problem but usually not noticed unless the car's white.

Here's some info on it Rail dust

Basically clean it up with a clay bar before it gets worse and actually starts to eat away at your paint. Unfortunately rail dust won't be covered under warranty.

Hope this helps!
