Hesitation under WOT (cold) = bad O2 sensor?

i tried seraching but the serach is all jacked up i guess. i get a "page not found" page.

anyway, heres the story....

ive had a CEL for months now. and i went to autozone to get it checked and they said that according to the code it could be 4 things. one was a bad o2 sensor.

anyway i was on my way to work and i pulled out of my neighborhood, which when pulling out you pull out into a 15-25% grade. so in the auto lancer anything less then WOT is a crawl.

so yea, the car was still cold and it was under WOT and it was hesitating (bucking if you will) it was delivering power but it was like it didnt want to, the power would drop and fall drop and fall. it was doing this in 1st and 2nd gear. i couldnt get speed enough to try and do it in 3rd. and also when the car was warmed up it wouldnt do it at all. so thats why im thinking o2 sensor.

anybody have an idea?

also if it is the o2 sensor is there 2 of them? i was told there was. which would it be if so? and also......where is it/are they located? ive never changed an o2 sensor in anycar and im not scared to try. im mechanically inclined but im not ultra savy about cars. im your basic kinda at home mechanic that can change my alternator belt/oil/brakes/flush a radiator kinda guy.

any help at all on this would be greatly appreciated.

two o2 sensors, one near your header and another after your cat. dunno if that would cause the problem though...

What was the code? If it's P0421 it's your cat. It's really common in lancers, which you would have seen had search been enabled. I had my cat replaced last year under the 8 year 160,000km catalytic converter warranty outlined in the warranty book with the car manual.

Try cleaning the MAF and check the spark plugs.

Can you tell if you're running on all 4 cylinders?

Give us all the codes first so we can stop guessing

Sounds like its misfiring. Do what Amby said and check the spark plugs right away.

i think thats the problem. i dont know the code off hand. i need to take it to a mistu dealer or somewhere besides autozone...anyway i think its just an ignition problem..... im not gonna lie here, i have never done anything tune up wise to the car and i have over 120k miles.

all i have done is basic oil/filter changes and air filter changes.

but yeah, i get to the code as soon as i can.

defintely try a tune up first before venturing into a o2 sensor especially since the sensor is alot more expensive than a tuneup.

new plugs, plug wires should help out. in my corolla i had a similiar problem. i had become complacent with changing the plugs. i hadnt changed it in 2 years and the car was fine until one day i tried to get on it a bit and the CEL blinked and the car bucked a few times. i replaced the plugs and plug wires and no more problem after that.

No. We need a total of 4 spark plugs. We only have 2 coil packs.
