air filter box

my friend opened up my air filter box, the stock one on my US Lancer. he took the filter inside of it out and turned it around, so now my car has a deep acceleration sound. Is this bad for the engine? Some friends say it shouldnt effect your engine, and some say dust can get through the gap in the box and mess your engine up whats your guys input?

First input is this is in the wrong forum. Please try to post to the most specific forum possible?

Second input is I'd only be worried about dust/debris from the (original) front being sucked into the engine, but there's no reason it shouldn't work facing either way assuming both sides are clean. Honestly though I can't figure out how that changed the sound at all.

Are you telling me you now have a gap in your airbox? Is the unit closed properly (the metal tab things in place?)?. If anything the only reason you have a louder intake sound is due to the fact that you're not drawing in air through the filter, but rather, just through the gap in the box...

OK...it's only 1130 right now so go to your car, pop the hood and put the filter back in CORRECTLY. The only thing you're doing to your car is allowing it to suck in whatever foreign particles find their way into your engine bay. Whatever horsepower you're getting is irrelevant due to the fact that you have no filtration device in in place (effectively) and your engine is having more harm done to it than good.

just wondering but why is this the wrong section for the forum? I mean i understand its hard to find stuff if its all messed up, but chill out about the correct forum thing.

Secondly, about the air filter, if there really is a gap between the filter and the box, well that could be dangerous, but if there is also a gap in the inclosure itself, well that could be even worse

I wasn't getting excited. This was originally posted in General which is a VERY difficult forum to keep clean because everyone posts just about everything there. It's really just rude to move someone's thread without telling them why though, and if I don't do it in a fun way it gets really tedious and boring.

If your friend has any more ideas like that, tell him to test them on his car first. Like p said with the gap there's potential to pull in stray dust, pollen, bugs or whatever else makes its way in there. If you want to pull more air or change the sound of the intake then look into a short ram. There are three that have been tested and proven already. 1. RRM, 2. RMR and 3. Buschur Racing. Nobody on the forums has a Buschur on their car yet, but it's the only one I've seen dyno charts for and they're all basically the same. You won't see the intake on their page last I checked so give em a call. The Buschur people are super nice. So's Rob Tallini at RRM who works very closely with us on the forums (posts under ROCK). RMR doesn't post around so much anymore, but their Group 2 Lancer has proven itself using their intake (which has the largest cone of all the intakes available). If you want to go the cold air route then Injen has one available and AEM has one in the works (no link on this one cuz I'm gettin' lazy and it's not available yet).

You've got plenty of choices, but messing with the stock air box won't net you much change. Check the reviews section of the forum for more detailed reviews of the different intakes.
