Cannot read codes

Good morning I was just given a 2002 OZ lancer for payment on an account from a customer. The lancer has seen better days, the body and interior are mint but it has 250K miles and runs very poorly. It s an auto and while you press the gas it bogs down and has no power it does not shift correctly haveing to feather gas to get it to shift. The car has an aftermarket muffler and CAI and when I took it to autozone to have codes read, the employee could not scan the ecu. It kept coming back as user error, does anyone know what might cause this? I dont want to spend the 80-100 at the dealership for a scan. The car had 2 owners, the 2nd owner (who gave me the car) said while the first owner had the car it was struck by lightning twice and Mitsubishi replaced every wire in the car to include a new fuse panel I will contact dealer to see of systems can cross reference that "rumor"

Thanks in advanced

Seems pretty far fetched to me. Anyways have you tried another auto store? many will scan for free. Also does the cigarette lighter work? If not then check your fuses, that could be your issue as alot of times the the fuse for the cig lighter also powers the plug needed to scan the car.

make sure the plug goes in the entire way. it goes into an aluminum housng and it is a pc of junk and the plug pops out of it. i got to play with mine every time i use it to get a good connection. most scanners will automatically turn on when you plug them in.

yeah i bent the metal tabs in so it wouldn't push thru. but that's a good idea. i'll give that a whirl too and see if she will stop flopping around in there.

I know that the scanner at checker/oreilys will not work on most mitsubishis or subarus but jiffy lubes does and autozones does and they do it free. I picked up a cheap scanner on ebay for $21 and it works great and gives codes and live sensor info
