I don't remember where in the manual but I read that the cvt will up or down shift it's self given driving conditions. I know for a fact that during up hill climbs it will down shift but im not sure of what it will do on prolonged descents from my experience. I think you should be able to select low gear (L) while you're descending. Just make sure you're off the gas and below 45 mph when you select L. Other wise you could over rev it.
But if you want to have the ability to select gears 1-6 you'll need either paddle shifters or a floor shifter from a gts. you can swap them in with out any modification to the cvt, they are plug and play. You don't need to install both to get sport mode. So if you're only able to find paddle shifters you can still get sport mode with them by toggling the right paddle. Only down side with having just paddles is that it will go back to D every time you come to a complete stop. So you'll have to re-select sport mode by toggling the right paddle again. If you have the floor shifter then you can remain in sport mode as long as you are in the (+/-) range.
