P0171 EGR valve smoke test leak

I'm having a very frustrating issue with code p0171 (too lean)

I did a home made smoke test using a cigar and piece of hose while blowing into a vacuum port. While blowing through the hose I discovered smoke coming from the EGR valve...

I did another little test on the EGR valve by compressing on the diaphragm with my finger, and then putting my thumb on the vacuum port. The diaphragm holds just fine and stays open. When I take my thumb off the vacuum port the diaphragm releases. Sounds functional and normal right?

So... Is it "normal" to have a little bit smoke coming out of the EGR valve? I keep doing research and some people say its ok if a little smoke comes out. While others say that the EGR valve is crap and needs to be replaced? What are your thoughts guys?

Any advice would be much appreciated. The EGR valve part cost $105-$175. I'm reluctant to buy it because it's expensive and may not be needed. Please give me some insight. Thanks for taking the time to read this ---Hamilton_eddie

Never mind. It was the MAF all along. I kept assuming that the check engine code was P0171 with out checking it every time it came back one. Come to find out that I got a new code: The dreaded P0421 warm up catalyst. God damnit!
