Loosening the top nut during spring installation

My friend is having a hell of a time loosening the top nut on the top of the springs. He doesn't have any air tools does anyone have any suggestions on how to loosen it?? He said the rod is spinning everytime he tries to loosen the nut on the top.

If he doesn't have any air tools, he has to stick his hand through the spring and hold the strut. I hope he has a spring compressor. If he doesn't have a spring compressor, then forget my suggestion.

Yes he has a spring compressor, only prob is brute strength is not going to hold the strut steady enough to loosen the bolt, he's tried vice grips with aluminum over the actual grips so as not to scratch it and the vice grips couldn't even hold it from spinning (Also it did NOT scratch the rod when he used the grips, the aluminum is softer than the chrome that the rod is made of therefore it did not scratch it.)

You NEED an impact gun to put enough torque to the bolt without spinning the center.

safest bet is to take it somewhere where an impact gun is available.....see if any neighbors have one...

I think a drill driver with a socket would do the trick too. If that fails, I used a cordless electric impact wrench, which has very little power but did the trick, and you can rent those for $20 at Home Depot or other places.
