Smoky the Bandit
Smoky the Bandit
So last sunday at the last autox I "smoked the compition". The good news is I won STS class, but my car was throwing out LARGE amounts of smoke. I'm hoping its the pcv valve but the amounts of smoke it was i'm afraid that its head gasket or piston rings. The only thing is that when i got home my car was not smoking anymore and does not smoke hardly at all so now i'm leaning back towards pcv. If anyone has had this porblem before let me know.
Just a little background, i'm running basic mods, i'm putting down about 120 hp at the wheels (Dyno Dynamics dyno 103 so that figures to be abou 120). So i'm not running much more than stock for hp. I do race the thing beyond its limits at the autoxs beating a good portion of the vehicles there.

congrats on the victory bro.
what color is the smoke?? that makes a big difference....if its blue its oil, if its pure white its something else, haha...
anyways what mods do u have? most anyone with 120whp have intake/header/exhaust and like the rrm piggyback or something

Well they said they couldnt really tell what color the smoke was.. i'm pretty sure it was mostly blue.. after i finished it was mainly blue smoke though,
I have intake (with a duct for cold air woot lol) grounding kit, test pipe and then nothing from the axle back for exhaust and an safc which i havent even messed with yet. Thats pretty much it for my car. I didnt think the Dyno Dynamics thing was true but then i read the article in SCC and i actually believe it.

Congrats on winning!

I know that, but the dyno dynamics is supposedly 17% lower than a dynojet at the wheels so that is where i am getting my 120 at the wheels
And by the way thanks guys, autox is very addicting and a hell of a lot of fun.. especially when you beat up on stuff like mustangs daily ;-)

yeah i dont think ur at 120...
intake is about 3, test pipe is maybe 2 and grounding kit is 1...id say 110whp is more proper(and thats giving u a few exta)
is it coming out of the exhaust pipe or the engine bay? it does sound like a piston...but i've never heard of anyone blowing up a piston with just those few mods...i'd def get it pressure checked or take it to ur dealership and see what they say (however they will probalby void ur warranty) once they see the test pipe or even the intake/grounding kit....

Out of the exhaust, well they were saying at mitsu that the oil would get in through the intake if it was PCV, and there was small amounts of oil dripping out my intake and so i was thinking it might hopefully be that. we'll see. but as for the hp i was doubtful but hopeful lol
edit: I'm out of warrenty anyways so it doesnt matter too much i'm just trying to get out as cheap as possible. I'll be pressure testing later this week, thanks for the advice guys, i appreciate it

Same thing happens to me occasionally. I have a post in here somewhere about it. It is oil from the valve cover sloshing around and not returning to the crankcase. It then gets sucked through the tube on the right side of the valve cover and burned off. Most of the time, it happens on courses that are at higher speeds with constant radius right turns, followed by a sharp left. This is assuming that it goes away after a short time, about 1-2 minutes. Makes for a heck of a mosquito fogger! I need to put a catch can in the line to solve the problem, but I am just too lazy to build one.
If it is white smoke-see above head gasket/piston/severe triage trip ideas!
