engine question

Alright here's my question for you tech guys that know everything
I was trying to put in my new intake when my vise grips slipped and pushed part of the honeycomb filter up I immediately put everything back in and reset the ecu now my cel is on but I don't notice the smell that you guys described when it runs rich and my gas mileage is pretty close to being the same as it was before I screwed the mas up any suggestions?

That sucks. Someone had a similar problem where they bend their honeycomb and ended up having to buy a new MAF because it disturbed the airflow to the point where it was screwing up readings. That may have been a costly slip of the wrench. My condolences.

The MAS is a very sensitive piece of the car. Bad move on your part and unless you could take the unit apart without annihilating the senors and put everything back together (which still wouldn't work if the honeycomb tore), it looks like you need a trip down to the parts dept.

If theyr'e just bent instead of torn would bending them back into place be a solution. I'm not having noticeable problems yet just wonderin

Find out. Just don't fry a valve or run into AF problems...

This is not something that you want to f*ck around with. Bite the bullet and go buy a new MAS. The CEL might not be on, but who knows if you're running at the extreme rich or lean end of the allowed spectrum of A/F values. This is a critical part of the car that you want working at 100% - anything less is not acceptable.

i'd hit up the "auto recyclers" and pick up a MAS there. or you can possibly run things without the honeycomb. its possible, it lets a lil bit more air in undetected. its an old dsm trick.

Or take the opportunity to buy air/fuel management and swap in a bigger MAF? Sory, I just want the damn GB to go through.

Seriously though, there's no harm in trying to correct the mesh so long as he doesn't mangle it further, right? If it runs funny again, just turn it off.

EDIT: It still ain't too easy tofind wrecked lancers.

mine runs fine and i took that honeycomb thing out because one day i was at the track and i was doing some practice runs on the side. i was spraying a 50 shot of nos and i accidently sprayed around 1500-2000 rpm and there was too much pressure build up and it blew off my cone filter and blew my honeycomb thing almost out. i just took it out and my car runs fine. every once in a while the rpms will bounce but that is about it

Whenever I was trying to get my airbox off of the MAS I crushed the honeycomb a little, nothing bad just scraped it with the wrench, there have been no apparent side affects. And GSRX7 the honeycomb we are referring to is the thin sheets inside the MAS

Thin sheets...? The honey comb can be viewed perfectly on a stock intake if you take out the filter element. Tucked in the back of the air box with the restrictor plate on it. It looks like...well...honeycomb. The thin sheets you're thinking of are probably the little silences on the back side...at least, I know the 3G Eclipse has 'em.
