Pyrometer Install... Placement ?

Im installing a new autometer pyrometer and Im wondering where it is best to put it. I thought I seen somewhere that runner 1 is where its supposed to be. Anyone have any input ?

Also when taking the manifold off to drill and tap it do the bolts come off or do they tend to snap when you start backing them out ? If thats the case Im going to wait and buy new s.s. head studs that way I can just damgage the threads on the stock stud and pull them out in one shot.

Thanks Guys. Looking to do a lot of installs through the months of everything random so ill be asking some questions. Thanks again.

The #2 runner sees the highest temps. Most guys are locating the thermocouple at either #1, or, #2 runner.

I've also seen a lot of people put them at the collector where the downpipe meets the o2 housing...works well there.

What collector where the DP meets the O2 hsg? At any rate, that would place the probe after the turbine discharge which will read a couple hundred degrees cooler on the Fahrenheit scale than if the probe is located pre turbo.

Or, are you refering to the collector on the stock cast exhaust manifold? The suitability of this exhaust manifold collector placement for locating the thermocouple is open to debate.

Mine is midpipe off the block on runner #2 (turbotrix/shearer t3 manifold)

Right about here. Manifold was unwrapped then tapped. Pic taken before bung was installed.

Here you can see where I have mine below. I definitely want to have it in the exhaust manifold before the turbo as close to the head as possible. The closer to the head the less heat that has been lost. There is no reason to remove the manifold to tap it; I have done countless while still on the car. They key is to use tapping oil and to have the engine running so the exhaust gasses just blow any metal particles that don't stick to the bit with tapping oil out and away. Also, seriously considering buying an upgraded EGT probe since the Autometer ones are big and very slow to react. I personally run a TRE probe and its lightning quick; you can even see it bounce with the exhaust pulses at idle.

I too, as S2kracka, use the TRE thermocouple. The standard Autometer probe is junk. Get the TRE piece before drilling and tapping your manifold. The Autometer one is larger diameter, whereas the TRE is 1/8"-27 N.P.T.

First, use a small pilot drill, follow with an 11/32" high speed steel drill and tap the threads with the 1/8"-27 NPT tap. Incidentally, TRE=TeamRip, the Evo tranny guys.

Also, look for a spot on the runner close to the head as "Kracka" used. Since the wall thickness of the runner is not that substantial, look for a spot that appears thickest, about 1&1/2 to 2" from head.

These probes work very well with Autometer, Defi, Prosport, and many other gauges. I have personally used them with Autometer and Defi gauges.
