Question Volkswagon GTI

coworker of mine is getting the GTI. I checked it out and its got some kick to it (180hp turbo). It looks like a Civic hatchback, which is why I'd never buy it (too woosy lookin). I was just curious if anybody else has seen or driven one, and if so what did you think of it.

Here's what it looks like

tremendous quality issues.......definitely tell him to stay away from V-dub. They are ranked near the bottom in the JD Power quality ratings and have recently been passed by even some of the Korean makes in this regard. I've also personally had 2 friends with these cars who bought them new and they had so many large problems with the car that neither lasted 3 years before they had to sell. You'll find TONS of stories out on the web about the bad V-dub quality lately....especially in the GTI and VR6 range. I've always liked GTI's personally because they make good power and have very sweet interiors and I have high hopes for the new one coming out next year....but until the quality comes up you couldn't give me one.

Quality was apparently the major thing that VW worked on with the release of the A5 chassis cars. They got the build quality down on the A4's...hopefully these new ones will be more reliable.

I currently have 01 GTI VR6. Heres the website for yu: http://www.myvwlemon.com/

I am the original owner, Ive had it for about 3 1/2 years and overall the car is great. Yes, there are alot of gremlins, like squeeks, rattles, and a bunch of little things that dont work properly. I just hit 50k yesterday. The reason I dont want another GTI and I want to trade mine in for an EVO are for many reasons:

1. GTI is too small
2. I dont like hatchback anymore
3. I dont even bother with mods b/c it wont make a difference
4. Everyone has one know and it pisses me off
5. As far as reliability, I have not had any problems, other than little stupid stuff

IT wont, 05 will still be MK4 in the U.S. However, fall of 05 will be comming out the 06 MK5 model.

YOU GUYS are crazzzzzzzy LOLL u saying quality sucks on a GTI i had a 2000 GTI VR6 174 HP 5 speed then i had a 2003 GTI VR6 200 HP 6 speed the car is freekin GREAT, OK power great comfort and i never had any problems. I live in NJ a bunch of my friends have GTI's that are sick power and look wize the car is awesome and a LOT BETTER RESALE value then my EVO that i have right now and BTW i would never TRADE my evo for a GTI ever again WHY ??? couse of the power and the handling, but if your looking to spend 10 GRAND less then a new evo on a TURBO car that also has some potential GTI is deffinetelly way to go and by the way IT was number 6 LAST year on the BEST RESALE value MARKET the EVO didnt even hit top 100 i think LOL who cares though both cars are sweet i am a vw fan for life as well as the EVO. I will respect 99 % cars out there because i am a car FREAK i will never hate on a CIVIC or anything else you know why couse people that buy those cars see something special in them, would i buy one HELL NO but they are still nice cars GTI definetelly way to go if u cant afford an EVO and ur lookin at some resale value

I had a MK4 Jetta 1.8T and LOVED it, but sold it to my best friend to buy my EvO.
Here is a list of mods
Window controller (allows user to roll up windows and close moonroof with the stock remote, never worry about forgetting to lock up the Jetta it will close everything but the door for you)
Black dashboard cover
Black floor mats
Black protective Bra
4 Tail light mod (adds 2 more brake lights for looks and added safety)
Turbo "S" Dead Pedal
Audi TT Pedal set
Sun glass holder
Passat W8 Domelight Assembly-Tan - Great little OEM
European light switch
Jetta/Golf IV Clear Bumper Side Marker Lenses
Pilot fog lights /wire kit / relay
Pre cut front vents for for lights
Mud flaps front / rear
Enkei CDR9 18" Rims
Kumho Ecsta Supra 712 tires
Bilstein Sport Shock/Strut
Progress Springs
H&R Front Sway Assembly, 22mm
Custom 2 1/4" High output catbak exhaust system/Borla muffler
ECS Race N75
APR ECU with home upgrade kit
B&M Short Shift Kit
Autotech Short Shift Kit
PROTHANE Dogbone Mount Kit
3 gauge panel
Chrome show plates “Volkswagen” front “Jetta” rear
Turbo XS type 25 Racing Bypass Valve
Clutch masters stage 3 clutch kit
Light weight 7lb aluminum flywheel
Phantom Grip LSD conversion kit
Neuspeed DP and high flow cat

The quality of the car is great in my opinion. It’s built like a luxury car but priced right and I never had any problems with it at all after 30K miles of driving it like I stole it. The only reason I got an EvO is because I feel in love with the EvO a long time ago but couldn’t get one here in the US. Always wanted AWD and more power never hurts (yea I know, it’s a sickness) It is a great sleeper, talking on a stock Evo with n/p (of course that’s with the $$$$K in mods I added to it). The pic is B4 most the mods were installed.

I have had mine for 14 months without a problem. Most of the problems seem to be in the early years of the MK4.

I saw two brand new GTIs today with dealer tags on them. One silver and one red. They look alright. I'm not a huge fan of these hatchbacks.

Err, GTI's are a dime-a-dozen around here. It's like the 3G Eclipse. Can't walk 10 feet without tripping over one.

yeah, they're everywhere.

anyway, i had read some thread on here a couple months back that the resale value on the '03 evo with 20000 miles on it is actually above the retail price of a new '03. haven't checked it out for myself though.

and if you're looking to get a fwd turbo car for 10k less than the evo, why bother with the vw? get an srt-4 or a used wrx.

i'm just not impressed with the quality and reliability issues of the vws... every vw (and audis) i've come across personally (friends and whatnot) have fallen apart.
